Boston Red Sox to Watch Julio Teheran and Anibal Sanchez Pitch this Week
On Tuesday, free-agents Julio Teheran and Anibal Sanchez will throw for scouts. The Mato Sports Management clients are both coming off of a disastrous 2020 seasons. The Red Sox will have their scouts on hand to watch both Teheran and Sanchez, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Teheran/Sanchez Showcase
Last season, Teheran signed with the Angels for $9 million but never lived up to that one-year deal. It was a rough start to 2020 due to testing positive for COVID-19 and then he never truly built his arm strength up. He went 0-4 in 2020 with a 10.05 ERA in 10 games and nine starts. The Angels were 2-8 in games he pitched in.
Sanchez had a down season with the Nationals in 2020. In 11 starts, he finished the season 4-5 with a 6.62 ERA over 53 innings pitched. The soon to be 37-year old was looking to build off a solid 2019. In 30 starts, he finished the season 11-8 with a 3.85 ERA and posting a 1.27 WHIP.
The #RedSox will be in attendance to watch Anibal Sanchez and Julio Terehan throw this week, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

There has been other teams that have shown interest in Sanchez this offseason. The Phillies have expressed interest in the veteran right-hander. Former Red Sox president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski is now leading the Phillies. He has plenty of experience with Sanchez from the time they both spent in Detroit together.

It’s unclear to the extent as to how interested Boston is on both pitchers. With Boston having scouts present seems to be more of the club doing their due diligence on the two starters.
Quantity Over Quality?
The Red Sox haven’t made an impact signing for their major league roster. Chief baseball officer, Chaim Bloom has signed only Matt Andriese, Martin Perez and added Rule 5 draft pick Garrett Whitlock. The team has also added former Royals reliever Kevin McCarthy on a minor-league deal and claimed Joel Payamps from Arizona.
Bloom has added better pitchers than last offseason but the roster still lacks more quality pitchers. Free-agent starter Jake Odorizzi is still available and Boston remains interested.
It remains to be seen how aggressive Bloom will be over the next few weeks leading up to Spring Training. Boston has been aggressive in their pursuit of quality pitching for their rotation and bullpen.
Boston still has options as they head into Spring Training. While there has been growing unrest from Red Sox fans on social media, Bloom remains committed to his plan. The Red Sox remain connected to the free agent market and Bloom could strike very soon.
