Boston Red Sox: Connor Seabold was impressive in Saturday’s start, tossing a one-hitter

There was a buzz in the air at Polar Park on Saturday for Connor Seabold. The WooSox would play host to the RailRiders in front of a packed house of 7,432 fans.

Red Sox prospect Connor Seabold would make his sixth start of the season. The young right-hander was impressive tossing a gem. He only surrendered one hit over seven innings of work. In addition to only holding the RailRiders to one hit, he struck out nine batters in the process.

The 25-year-old earned his first win of the season, he also lowered his ERA on the season down to 3.73. The WooSox scored two runs to provide Seabold some offense while he shutdown the RailRiders.

After the game Seabold told reporters at first he wasn’t having much fun on the mound at the start of the game. He said he was sick prior to the game and that DayQuil helped keep him ready.

“I’m going to be honest, I’m fighting a cold right now,” said Seabold to MassLive’s Katie Morrison.

“That wasn’t fun for the first few innings, but then it got fun once the adrenaline kicked in. I was sweating like a dog out there. A couple of times when I threw it, I saw beads of sweat coming off. But outside of that, I felt pretty good,” added Seabold.

Anniversary of his trade to Boston

His start also comes on the heels of the one-year anniversary of him being traded to Boston. Seabold was a member of the Phillies organization along with Nick Pivetta this time last year. The Red Sox and Phillies completed a trade that would send Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to Philadelphia.

Exactly one year later, Seabold pitched at a high level for Worcester.

A Finally healthy Connor Seabold

Seabold has missed some time this season with right elbow inflammation. He was sidelined for 2 1/2 months with the injury. Seabold was able to make his return to the Florida Complex League in July.

“I’m just glad to be back out there after spending most of the year in Florida [rehabbing], finally getting the chance to pitch up here,” Seabold said. “It’s kind of cool a year later getting to do something like this. It’s pretty sweet.”

The righty could be a candidates join the Red Sox when rosters expand in September. While nothing is set in stone, Seabold is healthy and is pitching at a high level on the mound. At the very least, the Sox have another option for the rotation next spring in Seabold.
