Avsolutely Having a Horrible Time: Leafs 5-4 OT Loss

Well an OT loss from the Leafs was not on my bingo card for last night, yet here we are. I’m going to start this article off with a little secret: for an obsessed Leafs fan, I have way too many other teams I like. Rangers, VGK, Avs. Just to name a few. If I like a few players on a team, I somehow become a fan and root for them to win, as long as they aren’t playing the Leafs of course. Anyways, the point of this was to say that I was really looking forward to the game last night. The Colorado Avalanche are such a talented, star studded team that I enjoy to watch whenever I can. For sure, I knew it was going to be a great game.

First Period

For the first five minutes of the game, I had the feeling that the Avs would win. They were controlling the play, passing the puck incredibly well and just being the speedy offensive team that we know they are. On the Leafs first shot on goal, Kerfoot scored. I thought this might be a momentum changing point in the game, although it was still quite early in the first period. THEN, Matthews scored two goals in a span of 33 seconds. At this point, it was 3-1 Leafs. The optimism levels in my living room were high, but still only the first period so lots of time for chaos to ensue.

Second & Third

The second period started off strong, until the Avs decided to score more goals. I mean, with a talented and uber fast team, I shouldn’t have been surprised. The second period ended and the optimism levels in my living room were still there, but way lower than after the first period. The third period was dominated by an avalanche of shots by the Avs (I’m sorry this was bad but I couldn’t help myself). Halfway through the third, I was quite sure the Leafs would not win the game. But we did manage to get to OT and secure an overtime point. It really is the little things!

Overall, the Leafs played really well until the middle of the third period, in my opinion. Jack Campbell played incredible, as per usual. The sheer amount of shots on goal was pretty wild and as much as I’m sure Jack would have liked to get a couple of the goals back, I was impressed with a ton of his saves. On to the next for the boys in blue. A mid season game where we come out of it with one point is not the worst thing and from what I’ve seen on socials, *most* Leafs fans feel the same way.

What’s Next?

On Tuesday, the Leafs will play the Vegas Golden Knights, then after that they are headed to four more away games: Arizona Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, then to New York to play the Rangers and the Islanders. Due to the Omicron variant, arenas in Ontario currently cannot have any fans present for games. I think it will be beneficial for the Leafs to play in front of fans. A sense of normalcy in the weird world we live in (especially in Ontario right now). Leafs fans, I do have one request. Please take one for the team and call in sick to your jobs for the next 1-2 weeks so we can all go on a road trip to do the wonderful SOUUUUUP chants. Thanks in advance!

Until next time, #LeafsForever
