Atrocious Penalty Call by Refs After Brayden Point was Checked into Islanders Goalie by Adam Pelech

This article is being update while the game is being played.

The Amalie Arena was rocking on Tuesday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning look to even the series against the New York Islanders at one game a piece. Tampa Bay struggled during Game 1 with miscues on ice, coughing the puck up seven times. The seven giveaways helped the Islanders get the first goal of the game and ultimately a 2-1 Game 1 victory.

During last season’s postseason run to the Stanley Cup, the Lightning dropped the first game to the Boston Bruins. However the eventual Stanley Cup champs reeled off four straight wins in that series.

Brayden Point Strikes First

The Lightning opened the scoring in the first period after Nikita Kucherov delivered a pass that Brayden Point put under the left arm of Semyon Varlamov. Point’s shot came from the edge of the crease with 11:02 in the first. Point has been red-hot during the playoffs scoring his 10th goal of the postseason.

The Lightning center had the lone goal on two shots during the Game 1 loss. Kucherov and Point have been in sync all season as the two players have a synergy together while on the ice.

Terrible Call By the Refs

As the first period went on the referees made a terrible call that changed the complexion of the period. The Lightning still had the lead as the period unfolded and Point seemingly had beaten Islanders defender Adam Pelech down the ice.

Point had the puck on hi stick and was prepared to make it a two goal game by firing the biscuit past Varlamov. Instead, Pelech made a heads up play by checking Point into the Islanders goaltender. Point had no chance to stop and he would collide with Varlamov and the referees called the penalty on the Lightning.

The packed Amalie Arena and Lightning fans on social media voiced their displeasure on the terrible call on the ice. Point was penalized for goalie interference and Varlamov was later sent to the locker room. He would later return to the game following the collision.

Lightning fans inside the Amalie Arena have had choice words for the referees since the atrocious call on the ice.

Islanders Brock Nelson would later score to tie the game following the penalty call.

Tampa Bay Reclaims the Lead

Ondrej Palat gave the Lightning the lead as he scored from the slot during the second period. Kucherov once again set the the play up as he fed Palat the puck. The goal came with 6:45 left in the second period and gave Tampa Bay the momentum back in front of their home fans.

The Lighting currently have a two goal lead in the third period as they try to tie the series one game a piece.
