A potential solution for the Bruins backend?
The Bruins backend, outside of Charlie McAvoy, has sort of been a blunder this season. With the trade deadline looming, the Bruins could be in the market for some help outside the organization. A few names that have been rumored to be available, but there is one that entered the rumor mill this week that should pique the Bruins interest.
Defensemen reportedly on the trade block that could fit the Bruins backend needs
There have been a few highly sought-after names highlighted in previous articles that are expected to be traded by the trade deadline. Namely, Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun and Dallas Stars John Klingberg are expected to be traded. A new name hit the market this week, which fits the Bruins’ need on the backend: Anaheim Ducks pending unrestricted free agent defensemen Hampus Lindholm. Rumors have suggested that if the Ducks can’t get Lindholm extended prior to the deadline, he could be traded.
Which Defensemen is realistic for the Bruins to acquire?
Previous trade deadlines have shown that Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney prefers to acquire players with term. Jakob Chychrun fits that description quite well. Chychrun has three years left on his current contract, which has an annual cap hit of $4.6 million per year. However, because he’s not on an expiring contract and is at a friendly cap number, that means the price to acquire Chychrun will be higher than most targets at the deadline. Lindholm and Klingberg would both be pure rentals, as they are both on expiring contracts. Lindholm is only rumored to be available because he wants to test the free agent market and get paid. Klingberg has fallen out of favor in Dallas; he will also be looking for a hefty raise in free agency. Sweeney would only trade for a Lindholm or Klingberg if he knows that he can get them to sign an extension.
