A Letter to Joe Burrow
Joseph Lee Burrow,
I hope this letter finds you well. Actually, what am I even saying that for? You’re that dude right now. Of course this letter will find you well. You’re on top of the sports world. You truly are America’s darling. You can do no wrong at the moment. Sadly, this won’t last forever.
The truth is, in America, we love to build elite athletes up and tear them back down. You just so happen to be the next guy in line. Look at living legends like Tiger, LeBron, Barry Bonds, Brady, Steph, Rodgers, KD, etc. We build these guys up in our heads as superheroes when they start to take over the sports world. Then, when they reach the pinnacle of sports, we do this inexplicable thing as sports fans: We look for every possible flaw in both their professional and personal lives. Then, we blow these flaws out of proportion, and try to squeeze every ounce of content and humor out of them. It would be nice if we could just appreciate greatness while it’s right in front of our faces, but that’s not how the brain of a sports fan works for some reason.
We don’t appreciate greatness in the moment. It makes no sense, but it’s a cycle that any sports fan with a pulse would agree with. So, Joe, just do me a solid and soak all of this up. You can do whatever you want right now. You’re the shiny new toy that everyone wants a piece of. That is, until you inevitably win a Super Bowl. Then, people will come at you from every angle trying to rip you back down to Earth from your throne. It’s only a matter of time until people start making fun of your sunglasses, the way you talk, your girlfriend– it all somehow becomes fair game once you become elite. On behalf of the world of sports fans, I’m sorry that the rest of us peasants can’t stand to see someone shine unscathed in the limelight for too long.
So, while everyone is on your side, just realize that this is all temporary. Not that you should actually care what anyone else thinks, just keep doing you by being the coolest athlete in America (maybe besides Klay). Side note, I predicted the Rams winning the Super Bowl before the yoffs started. Shout out to me. You’ll get yours soon though, Joe Burrow. You’ll get yours soon.
