Week One Studs
Bud Foster, the defensive coordinator for Virginia Tech had his least experienced returning defense this year. That clearly didn’t matter as they shut down the Florida State Seminoles and held them to just three points. Also in that game, Beamer ball reared its beautiful head. Frank Beamer, the former Hokies head coach harped on outstanding special teams play and they got that last night when Chris Cunningham blocked a punt that was returned for a TD. The Hokies walked out of Doak Walker Stadium with a 17-3 win.
Another stud was LSU. Nick Brosette rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers 33-17 win over the Hurricanes. Jacob Phillips had a pick six that pretty much sealed the win for LSU. The loss for Miami dropped them from eight to 22. The win propelled LSU from 25 to 11.
Week One Duds
Michigan. They lost to Notre Dame 24-17 but it was how they lost that was ugly. Michigan was driving late in the fourth quarter and QB Shea Patterson fumbled when the offensive line broke down that sealed the win for the Irish. In Harbaugh’s career at Michigan, he only has one win vs. Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Michigan State COMBINED. Safe to say that if Harbaugh doesn’t turn it around soon, he may be looking for new employment.
Florida State finally got their star QB in Deandre Francois back after he tore his ACL in the first game against Alabama a year ago. A team has a new head coach in Willie Taggert after he surprisingly left Oregon after one year. But this team couldn’t do anything against a rather young Virginia Tech team. They had one good run play on the edge in the fourth quarter but was 0-4 in the red zone with several turnovers and bad plays. It’ll be interesting to see how this Florida State team handles teams like Clemson, Miami, and Boston College.
