You’ve seen these all over the internet. Now, it’s coming to Couch Guy Sports. You can only keep three out of nine options. They can pretty much be done with anything. Sports, movies, you name it and there’s a “pick three” for it. I stumbled across this one yesterday and found it rather interesting. This is something I’ll be putting out on Saturday’s until quarantine is over. Figured this would be a good place to start. First one: sitcoms!
It’s a bit hard to see, so I’ll break it down. We have nine shows from the mid 1980’s, 1990’s and into the early 2000’s. Of course, you have to pick three of them. The shows are as follows: The King of Queens, Home Improvement, Full House, Family Matters, Boy Meets World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved by the Bell, The Golden Girls, Step by Step. This decision was ultimately very hard. But in the end, I’ve selected my three. Let’s break down each show and see whether or not it was good enough to be on my list. The shows will fall into three categories: IN, Honorable Mention, and OUT.
King of Queens: OUT
This is one show I could never really get into at all. Kevin James has been in some really good movies. Leah Remini is a great wife to Kevin James in the show. Then of course, you have Jerry Stiller as the funny father-in-law. But, this show just never did it for me. Sorry Kevin James and all involved!
Home Improvement: OUT
Home Improvement serves a good message. Tim Allen does a fine job of hosting as the “toolman”, Tim Taylor. He has to help raise his three boys along with his wife Jill, while getting advice from neighbor Wilson from time to time. Considering this show started before I was born…yeah sorry. You can’t watch television if you’re not born yet! Not a bad show, just never really caught my eye.
Full House: Honorable Mention
Sorry Stephanie! When choosing my third option, Full House was right at the top of that list. The cast is incredible with John Stamos, Bog Saget, and Dave Coullier leading the way as Jesse, Danny, and Joey, respectively. We get to see D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle grow up before our very eyes. It really shows how life can be tough as a single parent. But, you can get buy with great family by your side. It was incredibly close. However in the end, Full House JUST missed the cut.
Family Matters: IN
Yes Steve Urkel, you DID! But, we love you for it. Family Matters focuses in on the everyday life of the Winslow family. With Carl and Harriette Winslow raising their children, annoying and nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel pesters them at every turn. The best part of this show? Urkel wasn’t even supposed to be a main character! The editors and producers loved him so much that they made him a permanent part of the show. The evolution over time is awesome as well. Steve pines for Laura Winslow for years. Laura continuously rejects Urkel. As they get older, Laura realizes she really loves Steve. Then in the final episode, they’re engaged to be married as Steve heads to space. This show had it all. There’s all time Urkel moments that you can’t help but just laugh hysterically at, even to this day. Family Matters was an EASY pick for me.
Boy Meets World: IN
My third choice was down to Boys Meet World and Full House. At the end of the day, Boys Meets World pulls out the victory. We know the basics with this show. Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence end up dating and getting married, in a feel good story. But the thing is, the early seasons of BMW were incredible too. Young Ben Savage was hilarious. Rider Strong as Shawn Hunter was a slam dunk. The times at John Adams High School were very relatable, from bullies to girls, and everything else in between. Boy Meets World just hit differently. A lot of other people probably feel the same way as I do about Boy Meets World. Tremendously done from the beginning until the end!
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Honorable Mention
I know, a lot of people will be pissed at me for this one. Will Smith is great. The whole Banks family is funny and witty. The West-Philadelphia public school kid going to a rich family and private school narrative, I get it. It’s all well and good. This was another tough one. And of course, who can forget this scene that went off-script and became legendary?
The passion from Will and Uncle Phil (RIP) here will never be overlooked. It gave me chills just watching it again. Believe me, this was a very tough one to leave off of my list.
Saved by the Bell: IN
For me, this was number one. It had it all. A young Mario Lopez excelling as jock A.C. Slater. The stories throughout high school. And of course, who can forget about the power couple that was Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski?
We know now that Zack Morris was a little bit of a….slimeball. But when push came to shove, he really loved and cared for Kelly. The two got married to end the whole show! Plus, there were spin-offs during the college years, the class after this historic one, etc. This show will always be special to me. Zack was a lot of girls’ first crush and Kelly was a lot of boys’ (including myself) first crush. They went to Vegas. The friend group went to Hawaii. It had it all and I’ll always remember watching an episode with breakfast before going to school. What memories!
The Golden Girls: OUT
This was in the mid 1980’s to the early 1990’s. I wasn’t born to see it. Even with reruns, I just never got into it. Sure, there were some legendary burns. But this one just wasn’t my type of show.
Step by Step: Out
I watched this a little bit when I was younger. Cody was a moron. J.T. seemed like he always had something up his sleeve. Karen was cool for certain episodes. Patrick Duffy as the father was a nice touch. But this show can’t hold up to the magnitude of the other ones. Yeah, I said it!
My three I ended up choosing were Saved by the Bell, Family Matters, and Boy Meets World. Full House and Fresh Prince were extremely close. The other four? Meh. I can do without. What’s your three that you’re choosing? Let’s debate! Besides, what else are you going to do on a rainy Saturday in quarantine. Thank you and enjoy your weekends!
P.S.- for added fun, here’s some Zack and Kelly’s wedding in Vegas scenes!
