Will the Red Sox promote top prospect Marcelo Mayer to the majors this season?
Boston Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer
Boston Red Sox top prospect shortstop Marcelo Mayer has been in the system since he was drafted 4th overall in 2021. Mayer does have a lot of upside especially with the shortstop position and talented all around player for only being 20 years old. With the departure of long-time shortstop Xander Bogaerts signing with the San Diego Padres this offseason, will this open the door for Mayer later this season? With Kiké Hernandez starting the season as the team’s primary shortstop, it would be nice to see Mayer being a September call-up depending on if they are in the race for the playoffs. The kid has shown that he can be the team’s primary shortstop of the future with his hitting ability and play on the field.
Marcelo Mayer 2022 highlights
Mayer 2022 campaign
Between the Salem Red Sox (Red Sox Single-A farm team) and the Greenville Drive (High-A affiliate of the Red Sox), he had 350 AB,61 R, 98 H, and .280 AVG/.399 OBP/.888 OPS, 13 HRs, 53 RBIs, 17 SB. Those numbers are decent for his first full season in the minor leagues and look for him to advise those numbers this upcoming season. Mayer knows he will get his shot at the majors sooner than later whether he will get the call this season or possibly in 2024 at the earliest.
Mayer projected 2023 season
I do see Mayer starting his 23′ season with the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox). This is a step up from where he started in Single-A with Salem. Unless the Red Sox don’t want to rush him up to Portland he may still continue to see action in A ball. Mayer will be the Boston Red Sox next shortstop of the future, once he gets the call to make his major league debut he will not disappoint.
