Will the New England Patriots take a chance on Dwayne Haskins?

The Washington Football Team officially released the former No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Dwayne Haskins was released on Monday following being benched by the team in favor of Taylor Heinicke. The Football Team lost to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday 20-17. In his last start in Washington, he went 14-28 with 154 yards and throwing two interceptions.

Washington’s football coach Ron Rivera told reporters he met with Haskins and informed him of his decision, “I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward.”

Leading up to his release from Washington, Haskins lost his role as a team captain and was fined for violating team COVID-19 protocols. Washington was made aware of social media posts of Haskins without a mask while attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.

Should Bill Belichick kick the tires on Haskins?

Haskins went unclaimed following his release from Washington which now allows him to sign with any team. Will the New England Patriots reach out to Haskins and bring him to Foxboro?

The Patriots quarterback play has been lackluster all season long. Cam Newton has had a subpar year, throwing for 2,415 yards, with five touchdowns and ten interceptions. Newton ranks towards the bottom of the NFL with a QBR rating of 45.1, which is 29th in the league.

It’s unclear what the Patriots will do at quarterback next season, Newton will be a free agent at the conclusion of the season. The reports regarding Jarrett Stidham are not promising as to what role he will play with the Patriots beyond this season.

Where will Haskins land?

The Patriots will be in active in the free agent and trade market for a quarterback next season. Haskins presents an opportunity for Belichick to sign a young NFL ready quarterback.

There will be suitors for Haskins as he looks to find a new NFL home. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers could show interest in the 23-year-old quarterback.

Haskins could come to New England by signing with the practice squad or even a future’s contract. Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could work with Haskins in their offseason program to see what they have in him.

Passing the Torch

With one week left in the NFL season, the Patriots will address the quarterback position in some way for next season. They could bring back Newton and see what he can do with one full season under his belt.

Ultimately it will come down to money for the Patriots if they want to sign the released quarterback. If it will cost New England guaranteed money to bring in Haskins, they should stay away.

Newton’s first season in New England hasn’t gone to his standards and he faces an up hill battle moving forward. The Patriots might still see something left in the tank with Newton. With the struggles he had this season, it’s quite possible Haskins could experience the same growing pains.
