Why The Cleveland Browns Should Re-Sign Jadeveon Clowney.
When the Cleveland Browns signed free agent Jadeveon Clowney they knew what kind of player they were getting but only on a 1 year deal could he prove himself in 12 short months?
Who Is Jadeveon Clowney?
Jadeveon Clowney is a native from South Carolina, he became the number one high school prospect in 2011, the 6″6 260-pounder, who possesses a 36-inch vertical leap and 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, racked up 306 tackles and 52.5 sacks over the last two seasons and yes all them stats are correct.
Clowney was already a star in high school so how would he fair in college? He decided to commit to South Carolina his home state even though he had many colleges interested such as Florida, Clemson and LSU. Clowney spent 3 years at South Carolina where he played 36 games racking up 130 tackles and 24.0 sacks. He was a weapon at Defensive End and was a rising star of the future in NFL.
Clowney Struggling Start To His NFL Career.
Jadeveon Clowney was a Defensive End who everyone believed would go far and that’s why the Texans picked him 1st overall in the NFL Draft in 2014 and even had three pro bowls under his belt. The only thing letting Clowney down is his injuries, he’s missed 29 games in seven seasons he has never had double-digit sacks in a season and played for four different teams but it is worth remembering he is only 28 years old.
Jadeveon Clowney has had many injuries throughout his career including a torn meniscus during his first professional game in which he needed microfracture surgery which would end his rookie season. He has also had foot ailments, elbow strains, concussions, lower back problems and groin strains, many players would give up and retire but not Clowney he wants to prove himself.
He has always struggled to stay fit and only ever had one season fully fit where he played in 16 games and had 59 total tackles and 9.5 sacks. No matter how injury prone he can be, he can prove when fit how good of a player he really is.
In 2020 Clowney signed to the Titans but 2021 wasn’t the first time the Browns showed interest in him but due to covid they wasn’t able to meet in person so the deal fell through. Clowney suffered a left meniscus injury which took him out for the reminder of the season and during the 2020 season he managed eight games with 19 tackles and zero sacks.
Is The Cleveland Browns Finally Home for Jadeveon Clowney?
The Cleveland Browns signed Jadeveon Clowney during free agency in April of 2021, no one was really sure what to expect when they signed him. Would he stay healthy? Could he help Myles Garrett?
Clowney played 14 games for the Browns where he managed 37 tackles, 9 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. His best season in a good few years, it seems like the old Clowney has arrived. Clowney fitted right into the culture of the Browns and even helped Myles Garrett, exactly what the front office wanted when they signed Clowney.
One reason to re-sign Clowney is for sure Myles Garrett, Myles has been very outspoken on how he wants him next to him next season. When Myles wants something he usually gets it and why not bring back someone who helped Garrett throughout the season?
Clowney has even said himself he would love to return;
When a lot of players come to Cleveland they instantly fall in love with the City and fans and Clowney has done exactly that. It’s not just Cleveland that makes players want to stay it can also be the playrs, it’s a very tight unit many players would even say it’s like a family unit.
The only question remains will Andrew Berry re sign Clowney? I hope so, he’s been a huge weapon for the Defence and surely they want to keep that going. It will need to happen fast as there is plenty of other teams ready to snap him up if the Browns don’t.
