Why Red Sox Fans Should Be Happy With Chaim Bloom
On October 25, 2019, the Boston Red Sox hired 36-year-old Chaim Bloom as their new Chief Baseball Officer. Bloom, formerly of the Tampa Bay Rays, was brought in to replace Dave Dombrowski after he and the Red Sox parted ways.
As Boston’s chief executive, Dombrowski did a lot. He did complete the ultimate goal of winning a world series, but that came at the expense of both Boston’s payroll and farm system. To help combat the damage that Dombrowksi left behind, John Henry and the rest of Red Sox ownership decided to hire Bloom.
Bloom’s experience with the Rays was supposed to help the Red Sox re-tool their farm system while also making the team’s payroll more manageable. And despite what some may think, Bloom has done that.
People may blame Bloom for trading a 27-year-old superstar in Mookie Betts, but he was pretty much pigeonholed by ownership to make that move. The owners wanted to get under the luxury tax threshold and trading Betts was the easiest/most logical route to go to get that done. Bloom was able to add half the contract of starting pitcher David Price, while acquiring three quality players in return.
Bloom’s identity with Boston has been absorbed by that one move. But if you look at the quality of work over his tenure, fans should start to appreciate what he is doing.
I saw some folks saying we were only going to ask Chaim Bloom softball questions. Question number one was, “Why did you trade Mookie Betts?” @Section10Pod pic.twitter.com/hWzxfuGTNk

Bloom is able to acknowledge that the Red Sox are not a team that can win right now. And with that being the case, he has tried rebuilding the farm system. But at the same time, Bloom is trying to put together a formidable roster to be competitive. And as challenging as that is, Bloom has been able to do it.
Chaim Bloom found a way to sign/acquire:
– Hunter Renfroe
– Matt Andriese
– Kiké Hernandez
– Martin Pérez
– Garrett Richards
– Adam Ottavino
– Franchy Cordero
– Marwin González
– Hirokazu SawamuraAND the Red Sox will stay under the luxury tax threshold.

Bloom has been able to add major league players that can help win games in 2021 all while building up Boston’s pipeline. Since the start of his tenure, Bloom has been able to acquire the following prospects
-RHP Frank German
-RHP Garrett Whitlock
-3B/2B Hudson Potts
-RHP Jacob Wallace
-RHP Connor Seabold
-C/2B/3B Connor Wong
-RHP Chih-Jung Liu
-OF Jeisson Rosario
-2B Jeter Downs
-RHP Josh Winckowski
In addition, Bloom has also been able to add young major leaguers like Nick Pivetta and Franchy Cordero in the process.
There may be some names missing from that list, but the point remains the same. Bloom is building up the system. And whether or not these guys turn into all-star players isn’t the point. The point is, each one of these guys has some type of value: value that will end up helping the Red Sox.Whether that is via trade, or on the grass of Fenway Park, Bloom has acquired capital that will help Boston build a sustainable winner.
Bloom is trying to build the Los Angeles Dodgers on the East Coast. He isn’t managing the team like the “Tampa Bay Red Sox”. Bloom is trying to build a team like his mentor Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman.
With the Dodgers, Friedman has made smart financial decisions while maintaining a farm system that is always towards the top of the league. That has kept the Dodgers in consistent contention, which is something Bloom is trying to do with Boston.
So while it may be frustrating to see the Red Sox currently trying to win without guys like Mookie Betts or Andrew Benintendi, the pieces acquired for those two are going to be the foundation of what Boston will eventually become. And if Bloom is able to create his vision of Dodgers east, the Sox could become a power house sooner rather than later.
