Once again, the Philadelphia Phillies were in the news due to winning the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. They signed Harper to a nice tune of $330 million over 13 years. What the contract doesn’t include is an opt-out clause and it also has a full no-trade clause. To me, the no opt-out is the biggest surprise. If Harper wanted to play in Philly so badly why did it take him till February 28 to sign?
Anyway back to my main point. After this signing was announced twitter blew up over the news. Mixed in with it though were some people still acting like the Phillies are not going to be title contenders this year. Let’s just keep in mind people, the Phillies, who in addition to adding Harper, also have added Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto, Andrew McCutchen, and David Robertson amongst others this offseason.
Last year, without any of those additions, the Phillies won 80 games. Not great, believe me, I know, BUT are you going to sit there and tell me that the additions they made this offseason don’t add at least 10 wins to their total from last year? You’re crazy if you think that.
The Phillies will make a deep playoff run, they got better and other teams in their division did not. It is pretty simple when you add Harper, Realmuto, and McCutchen to an already young group of studs, that is a recipe for success and I think all of the MLB will see that come opening day 2019.
It’s time to wake up people, the Phillies are good again and will be good for the next 3-5 years AT LEAST. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am beyond excited to see it!
