The Bruins playoff aspirations came to an abrupt halt in the first round this postseason. After what appeared to be a strong and deep Bruins team loaded up for a long run, tee times have been scheduled. Already there are various question marks and concerns that are arising in this premature Bruins offseason.
What will come with the Bruins Captain and other Free Agents?
Bruins Captain Patrice Bergeron has finished his 8-year deal and is set to become a free agent July 1st. I personally have been nervous about Bergeron’s contract status since the start of the season. Being a New England sports fan, I was sure that Tom Brady would never leave the Patriots. While I do not see Bergeron playing for another team, I’m not convinced he’s for sure coming back and will continue to hold my breath. Other upcoming free agents include forwards Curtis Lazar, Anton Blidh and defenseman Josh Brown. Lazar may have priced himself out of town as he was a strong presence on the fourth line and penalty kill this season. Whereas, after reading Anton Blidh’s comments about being a lineup player, I do not think he will be back. The same goes for Josh Brown and wanting a chance at a full-time spot in the lineup.
Bruins Salary cap dilemma
The Bruins are in a salary cap crunch this offseason and even more so if they retain Bergeron. Although, the cost to replace Bergeron would be even more strenuous against their available cap space and assets. A few realistic cap moves are moving out forward Nick Foligno and defenseman Mike Reilly. Both players had underwhelming seasons. A buyout would be the most likely scenario for Foligno as moving his contract would be costly. Mike Reilly’s contract may not be an easy one to move either. Another move to make is dealing Jake DeBrusk. DeBrusk really shined in the later half of the season and continued to do so throughout the playoffs. As far as everyone who is not DeBrusk or his family nor agent is concerned, we don’t know if he still wants to be traded, but the trade value is there.
