Two games in and two games on tap for the Bruins this weekend
The Bruins are 1-1 heading into this weekend with two games scheduled Friday night and Sunday afternoon. The tale of the two games played thus far however were of two different Bruins teams. Let’s look back at those two games and look ahead to the Bruins’ games this weekend against the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks.
Bruins Opening Night
The Bruins opened their season against the Dallas Stars at TD Garden last Saturday night. Brad Marchand led the team with two goals and Jake DeBrusk continued his hot start from preseason with a goal as well. The Bruins didn’t need to rely on their power play in this game and they also got some depth scoring. Those two facts alone are big positives for this Bruins team. All four lines were rolling effectively for coach Bruce Cassidy. Rookie goaltender Jeremy Swayman looked sharp and made stops when he was challenged, with most of the workload coming in the third period. All in all, a great 60-minute effort.
Bruins hit the road for Game Two
With a full three-day break, the Bruins finally returned to action Wednesday night against the Broad Street Bullies. Swayman once again got the start as Coach Cassidy announced that Linus Ullmark would make his Bruins debut Friday against the Sabres.
This game was a game to forget for the Bruins. A lot of mental errors from various Bruins in this one. The defense (outside of Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk) was questionable at best. Of the five goals yielded by Swayman, three of them were on odd man rushes. That tells me that defensive coverage was loose for the Bruins. However, like many of the other Bruins, Swayman didn’t have his best night. There were certainly a few goals I’m sure he’d like to have back. This is to be expected with a young goaltender, though. He is going to have his ups and downs. Personally, I’m not worried about him at all. He is one of the most poised young goaltenders of recent memory. This is one to forget and move on.
One at home, One on the road
The Bruins travel to Buffalo for a dance with the 3-0 Sabres. Linus Ullmark will start and make a rather quick return to his former barn. It appears that Nick Foligno won’t be available for this one as he reportedly sustained an upper body injury. Thus, Anton Blidh draws in. I expect Cassidy to determine his starting goaltender for the Sharks game after this game Friday. These are two very winnable games for the Bruins. I expect to see a better performance all around this weekend and four points for the black and gold.
