Three Wide Receivers Patriots Should Target in the 2025 Offseason
The New England Patriots will always be the NFL’s greatest dynasty. With Brady and Belichick, the Patriots wouldn’t have reached five Super Bowls in eight years throughout the 2010s, winning three of them. Things have changed, however. It appears that in the current state of the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs are the undisputed kings of the gridiron.
Led by the Patrick Mahomes, KC reached their third straight Super Bowl with a thrilling 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the conference championships. The victory was Andy Reid’s fourth against Josh Allen and now, those offering Super Bowl odds are making the Chiefs the favorites to make history. The latest Super Bowl LIX odds currently make the reigning champions a -130 favorite to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles and become the first team ever to complete the elusive three-
peat.
For the Patriots, their time at the top of the NFL mountain has long been over. One of the main reasons for that is the fact that they have struggled with consistency at the wide receiver position for several seasons now. But with rookie quarterback Drake Maye seemingly coming of age throughout the latter half of the 2024 season, it’s clear that the 22-year-old now needs some adequate targets to take his game to the next level. So, who should newly appointed head coach Mike Vrabel be looking to bring in this offseason?
Tee Higgins
Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins is unquestionably the star player of 2025’s upcoming free agent class. The former Clemson Tiger has quietly established himself as one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFL throughout his five years in Ohio, and his recent three-touchdown game against the Denver Broncos showed just how good he can be under the harshest of pressure. Cincy QB Joe Burrow repeatedly stated just how important it was that Higgins remained at Paycor Stadium if the team wanted to be successful, but the Bengals hierarchy has developed somewhat of a reputation for letting superstars leave. Should Higgins hit free agency, then the Patriots must move heaven and earth to bring him to Foxborough. At 6-foot-4 and 219 pounds, the 26-year-old possesses not only the length to dominate contested catch situations but also the agility and route-running to win against man coverage consistently. With Ja’Marr Chase headlining Cincinnati’s
wide receiver corps and expected to receive a lucrative new deal this offseason, the Bengals may find it difficult to meet Higgins’ contract demands. Higgins would provide the Patriots with exactly what they’ve been missing for years, a legitimate WR1. His catch radius, ability to stretch the field, and high-pressure
plays would sync perfectly with a quarterback like the talented young Maye. He would certainly be a difference-maker, and having him in the offensive lineup could be the difference between reaching the playoffs or having a fourth straight campaign without the postseason.
Travis Hunter
The Patriots will come in at number four in this year’s draft, but with at least two of the top three – the Tennessee Titans and the Big Apple’s Giants – both requiring quarterbacks, the door could be wide open to secure the reigning Heisman Trophy holder. That of course is Colorado’s two-way sensation Travis Hunter. The 21-year-old claimed a slew of awards throughout a blistering 2024 season, and he is now expected to be selected within the top five of the upcoming draft. While Hunter has immense talent as both a cornerback and wide receiver, his game-breaking ability on offense makes him an exciting target for the Patriots. His elite speed, agility, and hands make him a threat to take any play the distance. He racked up over 1,100 receiving yards throughout his junior year, including 14 touchdowns, while his 21
tackles and four interceptions are a bonus to an already stacked Pats defense. If the Patriots land within striking distance of Hunter in the draft, his addition would
instantly inject explosiveness into their offense. The Colorado Buffalo is a true playmaker who can stretch the field vertically or make defenders miss in short-yardage
situations.
Stefon Diggs
This time last year, Stefon Diggs was perhaps considered a top-three wide receiver inthe league. He headed to the Houston Texans last summer for a guaranteed $22.5m one-year deal and hit the ground running, picking up three touchdowns in his first few games. However, he was crocked with an ACL injury in a week eight clash against the Indianapolis Colts, ending his season prematurely. Now, he heads into free agency with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over him. Will he be the same explosive playmaker that he was before his painful injury, or will he end up looking like Aaron Rodgers? Well, luckily Diggs is ten years younger than the aforementioned A-Rod, and he should still have plenty of gas left in the tank. That should bode well for the Patriots, should they opt to make a move for him. Diggs’ ability to create separation is second to none, and his consistency would provide a much-needed safety valve for Drake Maye. A tandem of the former Buffalo Bill and an ascending player like Kendrick Bourne would force defenses to adjust in ways they haven’t had to against New England since the days of Julian Edelman and Wes Welker.
