The Manchester Derby!
In less than 24 hours, the city of Manchester, UK will have its Manchester Football Derby. Earlier in the season, when the season schedules are released, most fans around the city of Manchester circle this day for many reasons. First of, it is one of the oldest rivalries in the world of soccer. Secondly, the history behind the derby is one that the English pride themselves on.
Tomorrow at about 12:30PM EST, Manchester City vs. Manchester United will take place. Manchester City goes into the pitch with the hopes of stopping a highly dangerous Manchester United roster after some serious moves during the winter break that allowed for transfers to be made. One of them being the sensational $64 Million euros signing of Bruno Fernandes. Another being the transfer of Odion Ighalo, whose scored in 3 of his past 5 games playing for the Red Devils.
Some of you may ask yourselves, why is this match so important? Well, a couple reasons being the following:
Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola:
The question come tomorrow will be, how seriously will Pep Guardiola take this derby tomorrow? As is, he admitted during an interview earlier in the week after Manchester City’s victory over Sheffield United, that the Premier League would be something they cannot win this year. Their side continues to struggle with injuries and some players lacking to find themselves in top form.
However, Manchester City currently has some motivation. It’s the fact that they are still in the fight to be allowed to play next years’ Champions League as they challenge a ruling made that bans them from participating in this highly sought after tournament. The UEFA has banned them due to findings of alleged breaches of financial fair play. This goes along with fines of $32.5 Million USD, for the next two seasons.
Manchester United
As I mentioned earlier, the signings of Fernandes and Ighalo has given new life to a beaten and unlike-season for Manchester United. However, the derby is at home for the Red Devils. Manchester United has lost their last three home games against Manchester City in all competitions. A win tomorrow at Old Trafford could dictate their likelihood to go into the Champions League next year. It also gets them a lot closer to finishing in the top four in the table.
