The Final Matchday

TheWith the last match day in the top five leagues in the world approaching, we have some interesting matchups that have a plethora of implications involving next season and further. We have some winners already has Manchester City has already clinched the English Premier League Title. Bayern Munich has also already clinched the Bundesliga title, and Inter Milan has already clinched the Serie A title. We have three teams fighting for the Ligue one title, and two teams fighting for the La Liga title as well. There are also champions league spots that are still up for grabs in some leagues. So with that being said let’s talk about what you need to know on the final matchday of the 2020-2021 campaign.

English Premier League:

We already have the top two spots clinched in the EPL so far. With Manchester City winning the league and Manchester United already locked up at number two in the table. There are three teams that are fighting for the two remaining Champions league spots on Sunday. Those three teams are Chelsea (3rd with 67 points), Liverpool (4th with 66 points), and Leicester City (5th with 66 points/loses the tiebreaker to Liverpool due to having a lower goal differential).

So on Sunday all three teams play their final game of the season all having a chance to go to the Champions League next season. Chelsea is on the road at Aston Villa, Liverpool is home against Crystal Palace, and Leicester City is home against Tottenham. All three matchups will be entertaining to watch to say the least. Here are the scenarios for all three teams to get in.

How Each Team Can Qualify:

Chelsea:

With a win or a loss from either Liverpool/Leicester City

Liverpool:

With a win or a loss from Leicester City

Leicester City:

With a win and a Liverpool or Chelsea loss/Liverpool draw

Who will finish in the top four of the English Premier League? I believe it will be Chelsea and Liverpool, but we will have to wait until Sunday to find out.

La Liga:

The La Liga winner for the 2020-2021 season will be seen after their final matchday on Saturday. The two teams that has a chance to win the league this year is Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid just needs to win on Saturday to secure their first La Liga title since 2013-2014. Atletico is on the road against Valladolid on Saturday, while Real Madrid is at home taking on Villarreal. Real Madrid needs a win and an Atletico loss to win the La Liga title. Another way Real Madrid could win the La Liga title if they beat Villarreal by 4 or more goals and Atletico finishes in a 0-0 draw.

How will the final matchday of La Liga play out? Atletico, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla have already punched their tickets into the Champions League next season by finishing in the top four of the La Liga for the 2020-2021 campaign. We await to see who gets crowned the champion of the La Liga though which we find out on Saturday.

Serie A:

The Serie A champion has already been settled. For the first time in a decade, a team besides Juventus has won the Serie A title. Inter Milan has won the Serie A title for the first time since the 2009-2010 season. Now we have four teams fighting for the three remaining Champions League spots from the Serie A. Those four teams are Atalanta, AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus. Here are all the scenarios that every team needs to make it to Champions League next year.

How Each Team Can Qualify:

Atalanta:

If they win/draw against AC Milan on Sunday. They have a +45 goal differential, but they are only two points ahead of AC Milan and Napoli, and only three points ahead of Juventus. A win or draw on Sunday will put them in Champions League for the 2021-2022 campaign.

AC Milan:

AC Milan needs a win to go to the Champions League next year, or a loss from Napoli/Juventus. They are playing Atalanta on Sunday who are looking to lock in their spot in the Champions League as well. The goal differential for AC Milan isn’t the best among the four teams looking to clinch three Champions League spots, but they desperately need a win on Sunday to solidify that they play in the Champions League next season.

Napoli:

With a win or a loss from Juventus. Napoli is playing at home against Hellas Verona on Sunday. All they need to do is win on Sunday and they will move onto the Champions League for next season.

Juventus:

With a win AND a loss from either AC Milan or Napoli. Juventus is the team that needs a bunch to happen for them to get back into Champions League for next season. They are on the road at Bologna on Sunday. Unfortunately they do not control their own destiny at the moment. They need to win and then need help from either Atalanta or Hellas Verona. Juventus not making the Champions League would be a big time story for the start of the 2021-2022 campaign.

Who finishes in the top four for Serie A? We will have to wait and see on Sunday.

Bundesliga:

The four Champions League spots have already been clinched by Bayern Munich (Bundesliga winner), RB Leipizg, Borussia Dortmund, and Wolfsburg.

Ligue 1:

We got the three Champions League teams already locked for Ligue 1. Now they are not only fighting to see which two automatically get in and the third team having to go straight to the qualifying round, but they are also fighting for the Ligue 1 title. The two teams fighting for the Ligue 1 title is Lille and PSG. For the qualifying round we have AS Monaco and Lyon fighting for that spot as well All three teams play on Sunday and here is how these teams can qualify for Champions League and win the Ligue 1 title.

Lille:

Lille needs a win or a draw against Angers this Sunday. If they draw they qualify automatically for the Champions League. With a win they not only qualify automatically, but they win the Ligue 1 title. That would be their first Ligue 1 title win since the 2010-2011 campaign. Would love to see a new Ligue 1 champion, and I think that Lille has a real shot at it.

PSG:

PSG needs a win to qualify for Champions League. They take on Brest on Sunday on the road. To automatically qualify for the Champions League they need a win on Sunday. To win the Ligue 1 title for the 8th consecutive year they will need a win and either a draw or a loss from Lille. Anything can happen, but the chances don’t look the greatest for PSG to eight-peat as Ligue 1 champions.

Enjoy the Soccer this weekend, it will definitely be one of the most interesting weekends in soccer that I have seen for quite some time.
