After an overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals are officially on the clock with the first pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. Cincinnati made it interesting in the fourth quarter, coming back in almost impossible fashion, but they were unable to come away with the victory as a Dolphins field goal in OT gave them the 38-35 victory.

The loss drops the Bengals record to 1-14, while the Dolphins got their fourth win of the season. But obviously that isn’t the reason I am talking about this game.
I prefaced this post with the fact that the Bengals loss gave the team the number one pick, and that means that they have a decision to make. Do the Bengals take Chase Young, the Ohio State defensive end that is practically number one on every experts draft board? Or does Cincinnati go with LSU quarterback, and 2019 Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Burrow? To me, the decision is easy; the pick is Joe Burrow.
People will champion around about how Chase Young is worthy of the number one pick- which he is- but “generational” defensive ends like Chase Young have popped up twice since 2014. Both Jadeveon Clowney (2014) and Myles Garrett (2018) were number one picks just because of how special they are.
Don’t get me wrong both players are tremendous talents in their own right, but a defensive end doesn’t win you a super bowl. In Garrett’s first season with the Cleveland Browns the team went 0-16. In his second season they got a competent quarterback, Baker Mayfield, who helped lead them to a 7-8-1 record.
I know that that record isn’t just a product of Mayfield’s performance but it is easy to see how important a quarterback is to a teams success. It’s a team game in the end, and players like Clowney and Garrett obviously help, but their position does not catapult your franchise like a QB. That is why the Bengals would be ridiculous to not take Joe Heisman with the first pick in the draft (even if they have needs everywhere sitting at 1-14).
You don’t draft for needs. That’s how you end up with a center that isn’t any good.
When you pick number one, you have a chance to change the course of the franchise. That means QB.
