Should the Patriots Make a Run at Deshaun Watson for 2020?

The Patriots have a huge void at quarterback for the first time in 27 years. As Patriots fans, this is something we’re certainly not used to having to worry about. Tom Brady is finally gone and we get to see what this team is like without him. Brian Hoyer re-signed for his third Patriots stint the other day. But, it’s highly unlikely Hoyer gets the starting job. A lot of people are calling for second year quarterback Jarrett Stidham to take the reigns. HOWEVER…there’s another name the Patriots could ask about…Deshaun Watson.

Yes, THAT Deshaun Watson! Watson had the highest odds of being the Patriots starting quarterback in 2021.

But, should the Patriots make a run at Watson for the 2020 season? Here are a few questions to consider.

Do the Patriots Love Jarrett Stidham?

Do the Patriots have the trust in Jarrett Stidham to now lead this team? Devin McCourty is one of Stidham’s biggest supporters.

He loves a lot about Stidham. The poise, the work ethic, and the confidence are a few named by McCourty. Listen, I’m all for giving the kid a chance. He played in the SEC, so he’s played against high quality competition in the past. He knows the system. Brian Hoyer will be a great tool for Stidham to utilize in understanding the system better. So now, it’s up to Bill Belichick. Just how much does Belichick trust Stidham to lead the charge in 2020?

Do the Patriots Want to be Contenders Immediately Again in 2020?

The Patriots right now are not the top team in the AFC. Personally, I think the Chiefs and Ravens are better than them. If the Patriots want to be contenders in the AFC again, Deshaun Watson could be the answer. He’s led an NFL offense to multiple playoff appearances. The man would have Belichick and Josh McDaniels to work with as opposed to having Bill O’Brien. Yeah, clear upgrade there! There is still a lot of talent on this roster. Plus, a certain veteran receiver with the #11 might like the idea of catching passes from Watson too.

Does Watson Want Out of Houston NOW?!

Reminder: Watson is a free agent in 2021. Could Watson force his way out? I mean, the Texans just traded away his number one weapon in Deandre Hopkins. The Texans are going nowhere. Maybe they’re looking to rebuild? I don’t know what direction they’re going in for 2020. But Watson might need a change of scenery. What better change than a winning organization that’s in need of a new franchise quarterback?

In Conclusion

Do I think Watson is a Patriot in 2020? No. But, could the Patriots make a move for him now if they wanted to? I think so. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities here. Plus, the odds are saying Watson ends up a Patriot anyway. This isn’t a fantasy scenario. The notion could have some legs. Speaking of legs, the Patriots would have a quarterback that can make plays with his legs for the first time in awhile. If you love Stidham, then roll the dice and see what happens. But if Watson is that appealing, why not pick up the phone and see what it would take to get him? At this rate, you have nothing to lose. We can dream, right?
