With offseason rumors in full swing, it’s no secret the Bruins will be making some moves. Defenseman Kevan Miller is a big question mark right now, especially because he is about to become an unrestricted free agent.
As far as rumors go, we know Zdeno Chara wants to stay put and Torey Krug will most likely leave. This shifts the focus to Miller, who is 32 years old and has not played a game since April 2019 due to a kneecap injury. He has had four surgeries to correct the issue and there is no timetable for his return.
Miller is physical and has a strong presence that makes him stand out in front of the net. However, besides Zdeno Chara, the Bruins blue line is full of fresh young faces. Miller cannot keep up with the likes of Connor Clifton, Charlie McAvoy, or Brandon Carlo. Are his size and physicality alone enough to keep him on the roster?
If the Bruins re-sign Miller, there won’t be much cap space for Jake DeBrusk, for example. DeBrusk is nearing the end of his three-year deal. He will become a restricted free agent within the next month. In my opinion, an aging injury-prone defenseman should not be a top priority.
Bruins GM Don Sweeney recently commented on Miller’s future. “I have optimism that Kevan will do everything possible to be healthy in order to play. He has the desire to continue to play,” Sweeney said. “He’s had a very painful injury that is taking much longer than any of us had hoped and Kevan had hoped. But he’s worked incredibly hard and I know he’ll continue to do that to give himself the opportunity to play in the NHL again.”
It’s not Miller’s fault that he’s had unfortunate injury luck, but it’s time to think longterm. The Bruins need to decide if they can continue to put money toward him and invest in him any further.
