Return of Torey Krug Will Be Huge For The Bruins
All signs point to Boston Bruins defenseman, Torey Krug, making his season debut on Tuesday night when the team visits the Carolina Hurricanes. Krug, who’s missed the first 11 games of the season with a foot injury, will be a welcome return to the B’s defensive unit.
The 27-year-old defenseman is coming off a year that saw him post a career high 45 assists and 59 points in 76 games during the 2017–18 campaign. Five goals and 19 of those assists came on the power play last season, which is where Krug does most of his damage from.
The Bruins currently own a top-10 power play in the NHL, so to say it hasn’t been very much successful is a lie. However, at times the power play hasn’t looked as good as it can be. This isn’t a knock on Matt Grzelcyk, but a praise to Torey Krug. Grzelcyk has done a terrific job filling in for Krug on the man advantage for the Bruins so far this season. He’s picked up three assists on the power play for the B’s. But things have just looked different out there at times. Krug is one of the best power play quarterbacks in the NHL, which was proven by his numbers last season. So when Krug returns to the Bruins lineup, the teams power play just gets that much better.
When Krug returns to his normal spot at the blue line on the Bruins man advantage, he’ll end up bumping Grzelcyk down to the second unit. Grzelcyk going down just means that the second unit gets a whole lot scarier too. When the team is fully healthy, they can have two extremely talented power play units. When that happens, it makes it tough for teams to beat them.
Bruins fans, myself included, sometimes take Torey Krug for granted. His defensive game isn’t as good as you would want it to be. However, he adds an element on offense that not many can. He makes a power play become pretty deadly. Getting Krug back into the lineup takes a top-10 power play and makes it better. The Bruins are already a tough team to play against without Krug. And once he returns the team gets tougher. Just a little memo to teams playing against the Bruins going forward…..don’t take any penalties.
