Red Sox Weekend Recap: Wait…They WON a Series?!

After 25% of the season complete, the Boston Red Sox aren’t in the position we all want them to be in. They’re 6-9, and currently in fourth place in the A.L. East. But want to hear the really weird part about this season? Besides everything else that’s gone on? The Red Sox are 1.5 games out of the LAST playoff spot. After a tough week, the Red Sox played a three game weekend series at Fenway Park against the Toronto Blue Jays. For anyone that may have missed this weekend, let’s get you all caught up.

Friday 8/7 Red Sox 5 Blue Jays 3

In the first game on Friday night, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3. The bullpen excelled as they went six innings and only gave up one run. But honestly, we’d be lying if we didn’t day this was the Alex Verdugo show.

Alex Verdugo won this game basically by himself. Two homeruns AND robbing a Blue Jays homerun in the 9th? The guy had himself a day. I get it, his past is really sketchy to say the least. But the baseball player Alex Verdugo is one that’s exciting and full of passion. This was one night where the Mookie Betts package didn’t look so bad!

Saturday: Blue Jays 2 Red Sox 1

This was just a classic case of the offense going missing. Christian Vazquez had the only RBI in the second inning. Otherwise, NOTHING! The pitching was good enough on Saturday to win you the game. But when you have Rafael Devers, JD Martinez, and Jackie Bradley Jr. all hit 0-11 combined on the day, that’s not going to help the cause. Just a tough day at the office for the Red Sox.

Sunday: Red Sox 5 Blue Jays 3

Sunday served well for the Red Sox as they completed their first series win of 2020 with a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. It was a dog fight back and forth with some notable power.

As you just saw, Mitch Moreland and Rafael Devers went deep in this one. Nathan Eovaldi also had 10 strikeouts in six innings, which was great to see. But this game was all about the final swing of the game coming courtesy of none other than Mitch Moreland.

A two run walk-off homerun to left center field gives the Red Sox their first 2020 series win. Moreland has been a big part of an offense that hasn’t seen Andrew Benintendi, JD Martinez, and Rafael Devers get going yet. Nice to see Red Sox fans have something to be happy about Sunday afternoon.

In Conclusion

The Red Sox needed this series badly. Cause guess what? The Rays are coming to town for four and then you have the Yankees in the Bronx for four more. Ideally, you’re hoping for 4-4. Will that happen? That remains to be seen, but I’m not overly confident about it. However, let’s enjoy this series win until 7:30 PM tonight when the first pitch is thrown in the Rays series. Who knows how many more times we’ll get to do it again in this weird 2020 MLB season?
