Red Sox Outfield Observations
The Boston Red Sox have one of the best young outfields in the game today. If you try to dispute that, you’re not going to like the end results! With Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi, and Mookie Betts patrolling the outfield more often than not, the Red Sox could have a fun outfield to watch for many years. But, there have been some heavy rumors lately regarding the Red Sox trio. Let’s take a look at a few of these.
- The Red Sox were PUSHING for a Jackie Bradley Jr. trade
Wait! The Red Sox were trying to trade one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball?!
The Red Sox supposedly tried to push extremely hard for a Jackie Bradley Jr. trade. Honestly, I don’t blame them! Bradley Jr. is one of the best in the business in center field, no doubt about that. But, his hitting at time has been inconsistent. He hit .234 in 2018 with a .717 OPS. Not great! Yeah, he was the ALCS MVP with three crucial hits (3 run double, 2 run homerun and a grand slam), but hit .200 along the way! If the Red Sox can get good bullpen help for J.B.J., then by all means, make the trade. Thank you for your contributions Jackie Bradley, but take your .238 average elsewhere please!
- Andrew Benintendi Might be Getting a Contract Extension
Andrew Benintendi is slowly becoming a core guy for the Red Sox to heavily rely on. Benintendi has had some sneaky good numbers in his Red Sox career. Last season, he hit .290 with 16 homeruns, 87 RBI’s and an .830 OPS. He was the A.L. Rookie of the Year runner up in 2017. The Red Sox recognize all of this and could be on the verge of giving Benintendi a deserved contract extension.
This is a great move by the Red Sox. Hopefully, they do the right thing by Mookie Betts (which I’ll get to in a second). But, if for some reason they lose Mookie, they have an outfielder in Benintendi to put in center field and be comfortable with for years to come.
- Mookie Betts Should Have Been Extended Yesterday
Mookie Betts needs to be a Red Sox for life! Read that sentence five more times before moving on. Betts is one of the best young players in baseball. Just look at his numbers last season, .346 average, 32 homeruns, 80 RBI’s, 30 stolen bases and a 1.078 OPS. What more does this man have to do to be in a Red Sox uniform for life?! Of course, it won’t come cheap for the Red Sox.
Yes, it is going to cost A LOT of money to extend Mookie Betts. But, look at the numbers. If Andrew Benintendi is getting an extension (rightfully deserved in his own case), then Mookie deserves a blank check and he can put whatever amount of money he wants on it.
- J.D. Martinez
Nothing new with J.D. Martinez to report. Just keep mashing baseballs over the monster and Red Sox nation will be extremely happy. No pressure J.D.!
Also, would anybody hate bringing this back every once in a while for a win in 2019?
Just me? Okay, cool! Hit ’em with a little M.J., Benny!
