Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl

The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl is going to be an interesting matchup between UAB (8-4) and BYU (10-2). Conference USA going up against a FBS independent school. This game will be one of the better games on the slate for Saturday. With that being said here is my preview in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.

UAB

UAB had the best defense in the Conference USA this season. The talent is there and UAB has been great this season. UAB’s offense is a little too inconsistent for my liking, but their defense can hang against a team like BYU. For the offense this running game is going to need to get going early on. If they struggle out of the gate, it will be a tough time for them to take control of this game. They need to keep BYU’s offense off of the field as much as possible. With their running game getting going it sets up the entire offense to succeed. BYU’s defense also struggles against the run which could start a great trend for the Blazers.

For UAB’s defense, they need to contain their hot play like they have during the season. UAB is great against the run besides two times this season, opposing teams have struggle to put up over 150 rushing yards against them. Look for UAB’s defense to have a fantastic time against this BYU team this season.

BYU

BYU has a talented running back in Tyler Allgeier, and he will have his hands full with this UAB front seven. The Cougars will look to mix in their passing attack with their solid running game in order to keep UAB’s defense on their toes. BYU has some good wins this season against Utah, Arizona St and USC. Those are three wins against a PAC 12 team that all play very differently. I just see this BYU team doing well, but I do think that this game will be kept very close for the majority of the game. Can BYU turn it up late and break open a huge lead on UAB? They for sure can, but this BYU defense has given up more than 20 points in six out of their last seven games. They are going to need to make stops because if UAB’s rushing offense gets going the Cougars could be in some serious trouble.

Prediction:

BYU is currently 7-point favorites and the over/under is currently set at 54.5. I lean UAB +7 here, only thing worrying myself is the late rush for BYU that will take them over the line, and they win. BYU is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven bowl games so that is something to watch out for.  However, my play for this game is under 54.5. In BYU’s last seven matchups against a C-USA team the under has hit in all seven matchups. I think the tempo of this game starts out slow and it finishes with a BYU 24-20 win, or they win 30-17 there is no way that this total goes over.
