Yesterday, you saw my write up on the Brentford vs Arsenal game. This time I will be giving you my thoughts on every Premier League game that will be taking place this weekend. With that being said here are my thoughts on the matchday one games in the Premier League.
Man United vs Leeds
The first game on early Saturday is Manchester United hosting Leeds United. Leeds was a middle of the pack team last season, but a pest nonetheless. United added some big pieces in the transfer window in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. Varane is in question whether or not he will be playing against Leeds due to his form. The Premier League debut of Sancho and Varane will be must see television. United needs to not play their usual Ole Gunnar formation in order to succeed. As we wait for the formation we can only think about what this team will look like on the pitch in game number one.
Leeds will be a threat to Manchester United in this matchup. Last year, Leeds started off on the right foot with a high scoring affair with Liverpool. This year I expect them to continue to play to the level that they were at last year, but take it up another notch. United blew out Leeds last year, but this time around I think this match will be a lot closer.
Prediction: This game finishes in a 1-1 draw.
Leicester City vs Wolves
Leicester City really needs to bounce back in a big way after their collapse the last two seasons towards the end of the year. They take on Wolves who has a real different look this season. I am not sold on Wolves’ goaltending at the moment. This game will be decided with 20 mins left in the second half. Scoreless first half due to both teams defenses playing well, but their is one name that can score at any moment when it comes to the Premier League. That name is none other than Jamie Vardy. Vardy will be the difference in this one.
Prediction: Leicester wins 1-0 after a second half goal
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace
Chelsea will look to build off the momentum that they had from their Champions League win over Manchester City. The reigning Champions league champs are 16-4-0 in their last 20 meetings against Crystal Palace. They have also won their last seven meetings against Crystal Palace as well. This matchup will be the first match for manager Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace. I think Chelsea is a much more well-rounded team than Crystal Palace is. Chelsea’s start for their quest at winning the Premier League Title in 2021/2022 starts with a big win over Crystal Palace.
Prediction: Chelsea wins 2-0 over Crystal Palace
Watford vs Aston Villa
Watford is back in the premier league and their first game back is against Aston Villa. Villa will be without Jack Grealish as he has made his way to Manchester City during the summer transfer window. In Watford’s last fourteen games to start the season they have only lost the match once in those games. Watford has posted a 7-1-6 record in opening games the past fourteen years. With Aston Villa not having Jack Grealish, I think they will need time to make the adjustment. In games without Grealish last season, Villa was not the same club. With that being said this game is going to be very close from start to finish. Should be an exciting one to kick off the season for both clubs.
Prediction: This game finishes in a 0-0 draw.
Everton vs Southampton
Everton’s first game into the Rafa Benitez era is a home game against Southampton. Southampton lost Danny Ings in the transfer window, so this should be a game where Everton gets off on the right foot. Everton also at Goodison Park against Southampton are 15-1-6 in their last 22 Premier League home games vs Southampton. I think Everton starts off on a good note, and Southampton are going to have to find answers to be able to stay within the Premier League for 2022/2023.
Prediction: Everton wins this one 2-0
Burnley vs Brighton
Burnley is a heavy defensive minded team, while Brighton on the other hand will look to try and get some bounces going their way this year. One thing going on Brighton’s side is that Burnley is winless in their last ten home games in premier league action. I do see this one being a defensive minded affair between both sides. Wouldn’t be surprised if their were no goals conceded by either side.
Prediction: 0-0 draw between both sides
Norwich City vs Liverpool
This is the fourth time that both of these teams have met in matchday one, with Liverpool holding a 2-0-1 record in those games. Liverpool gets back some big time pieces on the defensive end such as Van Dijk and Joe Gomez. They seem to be looking like they will be without Andy Robertson in matchday one due to injury he suffered in a friendly. Also under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool is 5-0 in matchday one games. With that being said this is an easy pick.
Prediction: Liverpool wins 3-0
Newcastle vs West Ham
The Hammers were a team that nobody thought would finish where they did. This year the pressure is on them now and they have to perform. They start off with a matchup on the road at Newcastle. I think Newcastle is going to take a step back this season, and we will see the start of it in matchday one. Looking at West Ham to be a solid team in the premier league this season. We will see the start of it in the first matchday.
Prediction: West Ham wins 2-1
Tottenham vs Manchester City
Manchester City is starting their title reign off with a dandy of a matchday one matchup on the road at Tottenham. Even with Tottenham’s questions like who will be on the team and who will be on the pitch in match day one. They are still a tough test for Manchester City. In their last three meetings at Tottenham in all competitions Manchester City has lost against Tottenham. No time ever in Pep’s time at Manchester City have they lost four straight road games against the same team. That is the sign for me.
Prediction: Manchester City wins 3-1
