Predicting the Bills First Round Pick
Tonight’s the night, the NFL draft is here. There is a lot of talent in this year’s draft class and it’s very possible that the top five picks could be quarterbacks. With that being said, the Buffalo Bills don’t need a quarterback. Buffalo holds the 30th pick in the first round and there are a couple of players who I think will be a Buffalo Bill at the end of the night. However, you can only pick one player in the first round. After a few weeks of thinking about it, I predicted who will be the first round selection for the Bills.
With the 30th pick in the NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select….
After having a few weeks to think about this night, I think the Bills will select edge rusher Azeez Ojulari from Georgia. Looking back at last season for Buffalo, pass rush wasn’t that noticeable, especially during the postseason. Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison aren’t getting any younger, so the Bills selecting a younger player would help them for the future. According to ESPN.com, Ojulari had 22 tackles and 8.5 sacks during the 2020 college football season. As I said before, Buffalo needs to start getting some younger guys on the defensive line. They already have Harrison Phillips and Ed Oliver in the interior of the defensive line, I think it’s time they do the exterior next.
Even though I think Ojulari will be a Bill, there’s always a possibility he could be taken before Buffalo. If that does happen, I do have a couple of other names the Bills could select assuming these players are still available. The first one is cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. from Florida State University. There is a question mark for the second cornerback spot. Buffalo already has Tre’Davious White but as for the spot behind White, it’s up in the air. Taron Johnson and Levi Wallace could be the ones competing for that second spot but it’s definitely possible the Bills draft another cornerback.
The other player I had in mind was defensive end Gregory Rousseau from Miami. During the 2019 college football season, Rousseau put up great numbers. He had 34 tackles and 15.5 sacks, according to ESPN.com. Like I said earlier, the Bills need to start getting younger when it comes to the exterior of the defensive line. If Ojulari gets selected and Rousseau is available, Buffalo should consider drafting him.
If they trade up
If there’s one thing that this current regime taught me, it’s to never doubt Brandon Beane. Earlier this week, I did an article on Clemson running back Travis Etienne. If he’s still available, it’s definitely possible Buffalo could trade up and draft him. The Bills fan base is split when it comes to drafting a running back in the first round but I’m all for drafting Etienne. Buffalo’s running game wasn’t much of a factor last year, so drafting Etienne would improve their running back room. According to ESPN.com, Etienne had 168 carries for 914 yards and 14 touchdowns. He can also be a threat in the passing game as well. The Clemson running back caught 48 receptions for 588 yards and scored two touchdowns. I would be thrilled if the Bills were able to draft Etienne.
It’s an exciting time for NFL fans. I think I speak for the entire Bills fan base that last year was one of the best years in franchise history. We’re still a few months away from the start of the regular season but with the draft tonight, we’re one step closer to football season.
