Today, the Patriots worked out fifth-year cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

Breeland was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, where he spent the first 4 years of his pro career. After deciding not to return to Washington this past spring, Breeland agreed to a 3-year, $24M contract with the Carolina Panthers. However, he failed his physical following a foot injury suffered while on a vacation in the Domincan Republic.

Since the failed physical, things have been pretty quiet in regards to his free agency market. There were rumblings about a possible one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, but nothing has come to fruition up to this point. My guess is that wherever he does end up, it’ll be on a one-year contract.

Over the course of his four-year career, Breeland has recorded 60 pass deflections, 8 interceptions, and 1 touchdown. He has also managed to stay pretty healthy, missing just 4 games in 4 seasons. Not too shabby if you ask me.

After losing Malcolm Butler this off-season, the Patriots went out and grabbed Jason McCourty to pair up with Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore, McCourty, and Rowe aren’t bad, but I would love to add Breeland to that group of guys. He easily would become the number 2/3 option if he’s inserted into this defensive backfield. I think the Patriots need that kind of depth if they want to get back to the Super Bowl. As long as they don’t overpay him (something that doesn’t worry me), I would be all in on the Patriots signing Bashaud Breeland. Let’s make it happen Billy B.
