NASCAR Takes One Step Forward and Thirty Back After Noose Found in Bubba Wallace’s Garage

One Step Forward Thirty Back

My mantra this week will come at the end of the article. ESPN reported that someone had left a noose in Bubba Wallace’s garage. This comes after Wallace, the only black driver, pushed the organization to ban the display of the Confederate flag. NASCAR released a statement saying, “Late this afternoon, NASCAR was made aware that a noose was found in the garage stall of the 43 team. We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we take this heinous act.” They go on to give the same run around whenever something like this happens. “there is no place for racism in NASCAR, and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all,” and there will be an investigation. Bubba tweeted out the following:

My Final Thoughts

I got a couple of things to say. First off, I saw a tweet, and I wish I could give proper credit, but they asked how wasn’t there a camera around. I agree. How isn’t there? Do you just trust people? That’s wild. Also, NASCAR read the room. You have ONE black driver, your demo is a Confederate Flag-waving bunch that is pissed off about their flag being ripped down, and you don’t think to add just a camera never mind extra security? Bubba Wallace and the team should be the number one priority right now. You should have an idea about how people would react and, if not, get someone on the board that does. I’ve been trying to see from the perspective of the person who left the noose there, and I just do not understand.

Every action has a goal. What is the goal here? One of the things that bother me is I just feel like it’s so simple but people’s hate runs deep. You can just take down the flags and welcome people who like the same things as you and enjoy them together. Only if, huh. It’s so much easier to love than it is to hate but the ego of America is what makes the country the way that it is.

People would rather die for their way of thinking than to admit their wrong or change who they are and what they believe in. It blows my mind. There is no need, no room for any of this bullshit in any sport or our country. It’s 2020 NASCAR. You’re so late on trying to do the right thing that you should be working twice as hard to try to right your wrongs. I hope they find this person, and he better be charged with a hate crime, appropriately.

Mike’s Monday Mantra

“Do Not Live to Satisfy the Expectations of Others”
Ichiro Kishimi, The Courage to Be Disliked: How to Free Yourself, Change Your Life, and Achieve Real Happiness

Do not live to please others or be afraid to stand up for what you believe in. It is ok to be disliked and some even encourage it. This is not a time for silence. We need to live our truths and hear them. Let people dislike you, be you. It’s a blessing to be able to think and speak about what you want. Exercise that. We need it now more than ever.
