NFL Top 10 Notable Free Agents 2018: Numbers 1-5
Now that the football season is over we’ve got the offseason to look forward to! Yay! In case you didn’t notice I’m being sarcastic. Not having football Sunday every week makes me extremely sad, but hey only 205 days till the regular season starts! With that being said there are some interesting big names going into free agency this year, and I will be talking about my top 10 and what team would make the biggest splash in free agency signing them.
1. Le’Veon Bell, RB
I think Bell is the best running back in football, with Todd Gurley a close second. This is an interesting take because Bell believes he should be payed like a top RB and a top WR and frankly I think he is right. You can put him out wide and he will beat 80% of today’s NFL corners. Bell wants to stay in Pittsburgh but will he take enough of a pay cut to do so?
Biggest splash: Signing with the 49ers. The 49ers have their future franchise QB locked up and Carlos Hyde is a restricted free agent. If they want to go all in on their offense and Jimmy G they should take a shot at signing Bell to a long term big money deal.
2. Kirk Cousins, QB
Cousins is the best free agent QB this year and he’s only such a big free agent name because the Redskins have already traded for QB Alex Smith. Cousins didn’t have the best 2017 campaign but he has put up reliable starter numbers for the Redskins year in and out.
Biggest splash: Signing with the Broncos. The Broncos need a quarterback desperately. Their depth chart now consists of guys who have proved they are not reliable starters in the NFL and going out a grabbing Cousins will be a huge step for them.
3. DeMarcus Lawrence, DE
Lawrence is coming off of a fantastic season with the Cowboys, and personally I don’t see them not re-signing him. However it could be the case that he wants more money than they offer him and after what he did last season he is going to want a lot of money.
Biggest splash: Signing with the Packers. The Packers have a decent amount of cap space and signing a guy who can reliably rush the passer to a big contract is something I could see them doing.
4. Jarvis Landry, WR
Landry led the NFL in receptions and recorded just under 1000 yards. Personally I think he is overlooked when talking about good WR in the NFL. I think Miami would be dumb not to resign this guy but you never know because they did trade their stud RB midway through the season this year.
Biggest splash: Signing with the Redskins. The Redskins kinda screwed the pooch with Terrelle Pryor, but I think they can make up for that by signing Landry. Grabbing another weapon for their newly acquired QB Alex smith is just what they need to start the offseason with a bang.
5. Sheldon Richardson, DT
Richardson didn’t put up the best stats this year but from someone who watched all the Seahawks games this year, he was a force on the inside. Richardson requires at least a double team almost every play if you don’t want him in the backfield and I think that’s huge for a team who needs a powerhouse on their D-Line. I don’t know if the Seahawks will re sign him because he is going to want a pretty big contract.
Biggest splash: Signing with the Patriots. When Richardson was traded to the Seahawks he made one thing clear, he wants to win and be on a winning team. The Patriots don’t have much wiggle room in regards to their cap space but I think they have just enough to sign Richardson. I think he is just what they need to get their defense going for next year.
Next week I will write about the remaining 5 players who are listed below so make sure to check back then!
6. Malcom Butler, CB
7. Allen Robinson, WR
