New York Knicks Hire William Wesley As Executive VP

Today the New York Knicks announced they have hired William Wesley as the new Executive Vice President – Senior Basketball Advisor. All around, I would say this is a hire in the right direction. First off Mr. Worldwide Wes is an entertainment icon who has been name dropped in many hip-hop records and is friends with some of the biggest names in basketball. So from a marketing/recruitment standpoint this is probably the best hire the Knicks could have done.

Now, who exactly is World Wide Wes?  Besides him being the man who taught Drake the game, he is a consultant for Creative Artists Agency and a high school basketball player, according to his Wikipedia page.  After that Wes joined into the sports and entertainment business. But the Knicks hired him for one reason and one reason only, to get them a star. Wes, who is friends with players like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Allen Iverson and Kentucky basketball as a whole, will have his work cut out for him this off-season.

As we all know, the Knicks are in desperate need of a superstar.  They got “robbed” when Kyrie and KD went to Brooklyn. It also didn’t help when they didn’t get number 1 for Zion. With that being said, I don’t think the Knicks have a bad roster.  I know I’m definitely in the minority for saying that, but they are young and have a ton of upside.  I mean RJ, Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith Jr., Julius Randle, and Mitchell Robinson aren’t bad players, they’re just young.  And the Knicks have a lot of young talent.  I think with Wes, if they can bring in a guy who can develop young talent (like a Thibs, who’s currently the front runner) and then pair that with a raising star (Donovan Mitchell) and then maybe someone who’s older with some experience (i.e. Gordon Hayward type player) then they won’t be bad.

The problem with the Knicks and I said it before and I’ll say it again is that they don’t give anyone any time to build. Each year they go into the season with the thought of playoffs, championship, repeat.  However they are a young team who needs time to build, and if you just came out and said that then the fans will totally understand. Another issue is James Dolan. I get it, players don’t want to play for him. But this hire with Wes might change that. If Wes and Leon Rose can get Dolan out of the basketball operations then they can fix this whole thing, get a superstar, and then start winning.
