New England Patriots: The Mac Jones era has begun in New England

The New England Patriots started a new era in their franchise by handing rookie quarterback Mac Jones the keys to the team. It’s something that all team’s eventually do and this was finally the time for New England. By doing so, Jones became the first rookie quarterback to start the season for the Patriots since 1993.

Jones looked extremely polished and poised in his first career NFL start. He finished the game completing 29/39 of his passes for 281 yards and one touchdown. If you’re not a fan of the Pats then you probably assume that this was beginners luck for Jones. However, Jones has been groomed for this role with the New England Patriots.

Although Jones is a rookie, he came from one of the most Patriot-like run systems there is. Coached at Alabama by Nick Saban, a long time friend of Bill Belichick, Jones quickly learned how to conduct himself on the field. In which, Jones connected all the dots and beat out Cam Newton for the starting job.

With week one finally in the books, Patriots fans should be pleased with the decision to part ways with Newton. Looking at some of the throws that Jones made, it’s hard to believe Newton could’ve done the same. Furthermore, Jones is more accurate and has better pocket presence than Newton, which is all you want from your quarterback.

While at Alabama, Jones became an accomplished quarterback. He produced 4,500 passing yards with 44 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions en route to a National Championship last season. This isn’t just another guy playing the position, Jones is elite and finished third in Heisman voting last year. He knows how to play the position and is a perfect match for the Patriots.

Watching Jones work almost flawlessly in his first two games is exactly what we’ve been craving for. Jones finished the game completing 22/30 passes for 186 yards with zero turnovers for the second straight week. In doing so, Jones led the New England Patriots to their first win of the season in week two against the Jets.

In just these first two weeks, Jones has gone up against two of the NFL’s best defensive minded coached teams. He doesn’t let the bad plays affect him throughout, despite taking big hits. He learns from his mistakes quite quickly and has rarely repeated the same errors after doing so.

Week by week, the Patriots are going to gradually open up more of the playbook for Jones. Although they’ve played somewhat conservatively, the Pats know they can run the deep plays in the back of the playbook. Josh McDaniels is going to allow Jones to develop within the playbook organically, and we’re beginning to see that.

In week two, Jones maneuvered a double-pass with James White and then connected with Jonnu Smith on a dragging route. Utilizing trickery in the second week of the season proves that the Patriots are opening up the playbook with Jones. He has all of the tools necessary to be successful and get the job done.

The New England Patriots are in the right hands with Jones being the future of the franchise.
