Nathan Peterman: Starting Quarterback?

No one knows what Josh Allen will be able to do in the NFL. We know that he can throw the ball a quarter-mile, but what else? That’s a question that everyone including the Buffalo Bills are trying to figure out.

Yesterday the Bills participated in their third preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In the 26-14 loss, their quarterback situation became a lot muddier.

Josh Allen finished 6/12 with 34 yards and was sacked 5 times while Nathan Peterman played well in the second half, throwing a touchdown with no interceptions (!).

I was fortunate enough to watch the first half of the game, and Allen looked bad. He was constantly pressured which isn’t his fault, but with defenders in his face Allen was making poor decisions almost being picked off a couple times. It doesn’t matter how strong his arm is; he needs to make smart moves in the pocket.

Allen disappointed, but Nathan Peterman looked good. Every one knows Peterman as the quarterback who likes throwing to other teams, but he has a legitimate shot to start for the Bills week 1.

If the Bills really want Allen to sit and learn, it looks more and more likely the Peterman is going to be the QB take that first snap under center for the 2018 Bills.

Free-agent acquisition A.J. McCarron hurt his collarbone, so not playing a single snap hurts his chances. Allen has flashed but doesn’t look ready. Peterman though? He looks like Buffalo’s best option.

The perception surrounding Peterman is a little unfair. He had one really unfortunate start so know people think he is the worst NFL passer ever (people forget what Tim Tebow’s throws looked like). The former Pitt product really hasn’t gotten a fair chance. When head coach Sean McDermott benched then starter Tyrod Taylor for Peterman, he must’ve seen something during practice. The guy is in the NFL for a reason. He has talent. Enough talent to bring the Bills back to the playoffs? I am not sure about that, but with the other options available Peterman may give them the best shot.
