Myrtle Beach Bowl Preview

The Myrtle Beach Bowl is the first bowl game for the week of Christmas. A nice weekday afternoon bowl game to keep me on my toes is a great way to start off the week of Christmas. We have an interesting matchup as we have a team from C-USA taking on a team from the American Athletic Conference. The matchup is between Old Dominion (6-6) and Tulsa (6-6). Two teams that are very different offensively and defensively. This matchup will be one that you are thanking that you are getting during the week, because you will be able to watch it. Now that we got the matchup out of the way, here is my preview for the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

Old Dominion

Old Dominion won their last five games to become bowl eligible, and this Monarch team has had a great ride this year. This is their first year in the FBS and they made the most of their first opportunity. Once Hayden Wolff stepped into being the starting quarterback, is the reason why Old Dominion is where they are right now. Wolff came in and that offense became a solid offense in the C-USA. This offense can control the clock and keep Tulsa’s offense off the field.

Tulsa’s pass defense is ranked 161st in passing yards allowed per game. If the Monarchs get that offense rolling, Tulsa is going to have a tough time keeping up in this game. Old Dominion will use their ground game to get their offense flowing. With the way that Tulsa struggles on defense, this Monarch offense will have a field day.

Tulsa

The Golden Hurricane offense is the second best in the AAC. Tulsa’s offense makes up tremendously for how bad their defense is. This offense averages over 400 yards per game of total offense. Tulsa will probably use running back Shamari Brooks early in this one to get the Monarchs on their toes early, but Old Dominion is good at stopping the run. This Tulsa offense can hurt you in a variety of ways, but they will need to mix it up to keep Old Dominion on their toes.

Tulsa’s rushing attack has been good as of late. They have rushed for over 200 yards on the ground in five out of its last nine games this season. Old Dominion’s defense is ranked 57th in the country in rushing yards allowed per game. The Monarchs are very bad when it comes to defending the pass. They give up 247.7 passing yards per game this season which is ranked 205th in the nation. If the Golden Hurricane offense can get Brooks going on the ground, they will have this Old Dominion team on their heels the entire game.

Prediction:

Tulsa is currently a 9-point favorite and the over/under is set at 52.5. My lean is taking Old Dominion with the points due to how bad Tulsa’s defense is, but I am nervous about Tulsa’s offense. My official play in this one is over 52.5. Both teams are going to score, and the over will comfortably hit in my opinion. One piece of advice I have for you is life too short to bet the under for this one, and don’t over think it take the over.
