My Thoughts On The Nolan Arenado Trade And Why It Is Good For Him
One of the best players in the MLB was traded this past weekend. Nolan Arenado went from the Rockies to the Cardinals. The Rockies were able to get 5 players back, including 4 prospects. $50 million of Arenado’s contract will still be paid by the Rockies. Pete Chatteron had a great article about who will be next to be traded in the MLB. Since this trade has happened there has been a lot said about Arenado leaving.
The Nolan Arenado-to-St. Louis trade is official. Other players in the deal have been informed. The return for the Rockies: Left-hander Austin Gomber and prospects Elehuris Montero (3B), Mateo Gil (3B), Tony Locey (RHP) and Jake Sommers (RHP).

Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado has been one of the best 3rd basemen in the league since he debuted in 2013. In each of his first 8 seasons he has won a Gold Glove. Yes, you read that right every year in the Big Leagues he has been the best fielding 3rd basemen in the National League. To go along with those Gold Gloves Arenado has also won 4 Platinum Gloves, which is the best defensive player in the National League. From 2015-2018 he also won 4 Sliver Sluggers. In those 4 seasons he never finished below 8th in MVP voting with a high as 3rd place in 2018.
Cardinals Add Arenado
With all that being said Arenado is a great player. Putting him in the middle on the Cardinals lineup makes them very deep. The Cardinals finished with a 30-28 record and 2nd place in the National Central. They lost to the Padres 2-1 in the NL Wild Card Round. Kolten Wong is a free agent and this trade most likely ends any chance of him resigning. Matt Carpenter will probably move back to 2nd base. Paul Goldschmidt and Arenado will make a great 3-4 combo for the Cardinals.
I believe the Cardinals will be one of the deepest lineups in all of baseball now. The National League Central is one of the weakest divisions. The Cardinals now might be the favorite to win it in 2021. Look out for them to make a run at the Dodgers and Padres for the National League crown.
Rockies Talk Bad About Arenado
Shit move trying to throw Nolan under the bus with the fans after the fact. He wanted to move on because you tried to shop him to other teams immediately after you signed him to an extension and assured him you wanted to build a winning culture around him in Colorado. Dick. https://t.co/fmuTBVFIst

“I plan on sticking around. So, that’s my goal. I plan on staying here for a long time. I’ve said that once in Colorado, but truly – I mean it. I expect to be here a long time. I’m not worried about that.” — Nolan Arenado, No. 28, #Cardinals 3B

Just do a quick search of Nolan Arenado on Twitter and you will see a lot of different quotes from him about how much he wanted to stay in Colorado. Down that same rabbit hole you will find the Owner of the Rockies saying it was not a great trade. It is not a good look for a team to bad mouth one of the best players on his way out. That is a bad look because now players will not want to sign with The Rockies. Players will always think about everything when deciding where to go. The Rockies failed at resigning DJ LeMahieu and now traded Arenado.
My Thoughts
The Rockies have not done a good job at finding a winning formula. A few years back they tried to make the best bullpen and it failed. They thought letting LeMahieu go was smart. He is now a MVP finalist for the Yankees. The Cardinals are one of the best run organizations in all of pro sports. Just look back when they traded Stephen Piscotty to the A’s so he could be near his dying mother. This is a perfect fit for Arenado. I believe he will only get better in his time with the Cardinals because of how great they are as an organization. As a result, if I was a free agent I would not want to play with the Rockies.
Wrap Up
Nolan Arenado gets traded from the Rockies to the Cardinals. Afterwards the Rockies ownership bad mouths him. That is not a good look for the Rockies. As always check out the latest episode of Legends Lingo.
