The Military Bowl this year is presented by Peraton. This bowl matchup should be a fun one to watch as we have an American Athletic Conference team going up against an Atlantic Coast Conference team. The matchup is East Carolina (7-5) going up against Boston College (6-6). These two teams should provide a very good entertaining game. With that being said here is my preview for the Military Bowl that is presented by Peraton.
East Carolina’s offense is very much a solid offense all around. They ranked 41st in total yards of offense, 41st in passing yards per game, 100th in rushing yards per game and 56th in points scored per game. East Carolina’s offense is led by quarterback Holton Ahlers. Ahlers has thrown for 3,135 passing yards to go along with a touchdown/interception ratio of 18/10. They also have a solid running game with Keaton Mitchell and Rahjai Harris. Mitchell has 1,132 rushing yards and Harris has 593 rushing yards. The duo has a combined 13 touchdowns for the Pirates this season.
Defensively, East Carolina is mediocre to say the least. They give up just over 400 yards of total offense per game. 232 passing yards per game, and 162 rushing yards per game as well. This team also gives up 26.3 points per game which isn’t bad don’t get me wrong. This defense will need to contain BC’s rushing game which is ranked 95th in the nation. If they can make BC have to throw the football more times than they would like, ECU will be in a nice spot to pull off a win in this bowl matchup.
Boston College looked like they were going to make noise in the ACC this season. Injuries derailed this team, especially losing quarterback Phil Jurkovec for six games. When he returned, he helped Boston College become bowl eligible and he is a solid quarterback for them. Even though he missed a bunch of time this season he managed to throw for 914 passing yards and has a touchdown/interception ratio of 7/4. BC also has running back Pat Garwo carrying the bulk of the load offensively. Garwo has 1,045 rushing yards on the season while averaging 5.1 yards per carry and 7 touchdowns on the season. BC’s running game helps this offense flow. Without the running game, BC’s offense will be in serious trouble.
Defensively, Boston College’s strength is defending the passing game as they are ranked 21st in the country against the pass. Boston College also gives up 356.4 total yards per game which is 82nd in the nation. The weak point of this defense is none other than stopping the run. They give up just over 170 rushing yards per game and struggle against heavy run teams. East Carolina loves to throw the football, so this Eagles defense might have a good day ahead of them.
Boston College is a three-point favorite while the over/under is set at 52.5. I lean Boston College here, because with Jurkovec at quarterback they are just a better team. However, I am nervous about the line so with that being said I am taking the over 52.5. I think both teams will score, and I see this being a 34-31 type of game.
