Mets’ owner Steve Cohen is ‘not happy’

The day and a life of being a Mets fan must be something. The Mets finally have an owner who wants to spend money to have a winning product on the field. Despite owner Steve Cohen having some deep pockets, no one wants his money.

This is especially true on Wednesday when free agent lefty Steven Matz decided he wasn’t returning to the Mets. Instead, Matz decided to accept the Cardinals four-year, $44 million offer.

The announcement came around 12:30 am and on Wednesday morning, Cohen voiced his displeasure.

Cohen and new Mets general manager Billy Eppler wanted an opportunity to match the offer to Matz. The former Mets pitcher wasn’t with New York last year, he spent the season with the Blue Jays.

The Mets traded Matz to Toronto for pitching prospects Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and now Red Sox’ prospect Josh Winckowski. Matz spent time with the Mets from 2015 until the trade with Toronto back in January of this year.

Jon Heyman trying to justify Cohen’s anger

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network and Audacy, Matz had a change of heart regarding the Mets and wanted to pitch with the Cardinals.

Cohen is furious with Matz’ agent because he wanted one more shot at bringing the Long Island native back to New York.

Cohen added that Matz “was a good Met” and wishes him well.

Matz went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 29 starts for the Blue Jays last season, bouncing back from a rough 2020.

Cohen saying his relationships with agents “have been wonderful” and that Matz’ agent Robert Martin went over line makes him sound like a giant crybaby. Players agents will always try and secure the biggest contract for their clients. If Matz legitimately had a change of heart, which based off of how the Mets have been over the last year, Martin has a responsibility to get his client the deal he wants.

Martin did just that for Matz, end of story, time to move on.

Conclusion

The Mets struggled all offseason to find a general manager, Eppler finally took the job within the last week. Cohen and Eppler need to hire a field manager next and based off of how finding a general manager and this Matz outburst, that could be another process.

Fans should appreciate Cohen’s passion about his  baseball team. Wednesday’s twitter outburst has not been the first time Cohen has voiced his displeasure. Cohen and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy duked it out on twitter in a series of tweets back in January over the AMC stock.

Cohen and the Mets will land a free agent for their rotation, unfortunately it will not be Matz. Fans will have to continue to be patient while the rest of the MLB fanbase looks on and watches Cohen’s madness unfold. Despite his deep pockets, right now, it seems no one is interested in taking his money.
