Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer gets promoted to Double-A Portland
Red Sox know Mayer is the future

Once former Red Sox great Xander Bogaerts left town to join the San Diego Padres, Sox nation knew that Trevor Story would be the team’s shortstop for the foreseeable future. With Mayer in the farm system, it will not be long before we do see him playing at Fenway Park. The 2021 first-round pick was drafted fourth overall by Boston some wondered if Bogaerts would be here long term and that was not the case because Mayer will become the team’s shortstop shortly. Mayer is all-around talented offensively and plays the position well out in the field. Boston fans should be eager to see him in a Red Sox uniform and contributing within the next couple of seasons.
Marcelo Mayer promoted

Bost0n Red Sox top prospect shortstop Marcelo Mayer moved up from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland this past week. Mayer, 20, has played many minor league games under his belt with 155 games in three seasons so far.. In 35 games this season with the Greenville Drive he had been batting .290 AVG/.366 OBP/.524 SLG/.890 OPS, while hitting 7 HR’s and having 34 RBI’s in 2023. In those 35 games also he had 42 hits and 11 doubles and I can see why the promotion was an easy answer to move up a level. If you follow the Red Sox, you know this kid has much talent at his position and is a very good contact hitter. Depending on how Mayer adjust to Portland with his recent call-up, he may make it to Triple-A Worcester before the season is over.

What’s Next for Marcelo Mayer?

As I mentioned before depending on how he does with the Portland Sea Dogs, Mayer’s next step would be playing for the WooSox and getting more reps under his belt. He would be then one step away from the Majors and it would be cool to see him either as a September call-up depending on where Boston is in the playoff race or seeing him a year from now making his MLB debut. I know management and ownership of the Red Sox want to take their time with Mayer because Boston has Story coming back at some point this season recovering from his elbow surgery earlier this off-season.
