Making the case for Jayson Tatum as NBA MVP

The Boston Celtics are currently a top 4 seed in the NBA Eastern Conference. This is a testament to a run that seems remarkable considering where the Celtics were earlier in the season. Since the new year, the Celtics have been one of the best teams in the NBA. Whose been the Celtics best player in that stretch? Jayson Tatum. Tatum has been playing at an NBA caliber level. So why not entertain a fun thought? Let’s make the case for Jayson Tatum as NBA MVP.

Jayson Tatum should be NBA MVP because of His Stats

I want you to take a look at this tweet closely for a second. These stats were as of March 28th. But you’ll get the overall gist of what I’m trying to say about the Celtics star.

Take a closer look now at some of these numbers. Jayson Tatum is a huge part of the Celtics improved defense. The Celtics are significantly better when Jayson Tatum scores over 30+ points. He has career highs in points per game and rebounds per game. Tatum is becoming a more complete player now and not just an elite scorer.

Look at the Other MVP Candidates!

The other candidates for MVP aren’t having the same effect as Tatum is with the Celtics. Joel Embiid? The 76ers are on the verge of maybe not even being a top 4 seed in the East! Giannis? Great player, but Tatum means more to his Celtics team in this particular season. Nikola Jokic? He won it last year and Denver is holding onto the last playoff spot. Luka Doncic? He’s another candidate that’s been really good, but not as good as Tatum in the Celtics incredible second half run. I don’t see how some of these candidates can match up to what Tatum means to this Celtics team’s success.

In Conclusion

Do I think Jayson Tatum is a future MVP? Without a doubt! But do I think that he wins it this season? Not necessarily. He’ll finish top 5 in voting for sure. But the NBA loves Giannis, Embiid, and Jokic. The three of them have been competing for the honor, side by side by side, the whole season. But at least Jayson Tatum is going in the right direction. He WILL be a future NBA MVP. So at least us Celtics fan have that to look forward to for years to come!
