Making the case for Ime Udoka as NBA Coach of the Year
The Celtics regular season is finished and they are headed toward the NBA playoffs. Coming into the season, the expectations for this Celtics team were not high to say the least. One of the biggest question marks heading into the season was how the Celtics would play under first year head coach Ime Udoka. But now, the Celtics are going into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in basketball. Some of that can be credited to Ime Udoka for players buying into his system. But is that enough to get Udoka some love in the NBA Coach of the Year voting? Let’s make the case for Celtics coach Ime Udoka as NBA Coach of the Year.
Ime Udoka Helped with the Celtics Turnaround
The Celtics in mid January were 16-19 and 23-24 at one point. When they 23-24, a lot of us thought the season was over. They were going to be a play-in tournament team again. But then, the flip switched. Udoka had them playing better defense, and then eventually; the offense caught up as well. A subpar/bad coach doesn’t get the Celtics to where they currently are, going into the playoffs. Ime Udoka had proven to be a good assistant coach. Now with this turnaround, he’s proving he can be a good NBA head coach as well.
Ime Udoka Brought the Celtics to 50 Wins
For the first time since the 2017-2018 season, the Boston Celtics hit the 50 win mark. Very impressive for a team that had to win 27 of their last 35 games to do it. News flash, they did it! Udoka has these guys buying into his brand of basketball. Don’t complain, play the game hard, and let everything else take care of itself. The Celtics 50 win season proves Udoka will be a tremendous fit in Boston for years to come.
In Conclusion
A top defense in the league and top five offense in the league helps the case as well. Ime Udoka has done a tremendous job with this Celtics team. You could argue for Erik Spolestra or Monty Williams as Coach of the Year as well. But don’t tell me that Ime Udoka doesn’t deserve at least some votes for the award. The future of the Celtics is very bright and Ime Udoka is a huge reason for that. Now? Let’s sit back and enjoy the playoff run!
