Making Sense of the Three MLB Division Proposal

There is a graphic floating around the internet (see below), and on it there is a proposed division realignment where there is 3 divisions. Namely West, Central and East. I’m going to focus on the East because that’s where we are, but in each division there will be 10 teams. The whole league would presumably use a DH.

The Red Sox Division

Our proposed division would have us, the Yankees (I left that lower case for a reason), Blue Jays, Orioles, Rays, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Pirates and the Marlins.

So the AL East, NL East and a team from the NL central. From these 10 teams, the top four will qualify for the postseason, making a 12 team playoff format. The top four would have a bye. The bottom eight would play a 1 game playoff similar to the current wild card games. Then, it’s a best of five and best of seven from there.

Of interest is watching other teams we are not accustomed to. It will give us some insight into a variety of players and organizations around the league that we may not always get to catch. It will be interesting to see where these games are played as well. Frankly, that all seems to still be up in the air. I also like the addition of the Nationals. Hopefully, they can help to drop that Yankee win percentage a little lower, with them losing in a 1 game playoff. I can dream.

There’s not a whole lot going on. So speculation is the name of the game. This is very interesting though, as it would provide a flair that we haven’t seen. If there is one thing positive about the Covid, it’s that it may force the MLB to experiment a little, and at the end of all of it, we the fan will hopefully come out on the other side being able to watch and enjoy the best possible product.

  • How many games would be played if we were to start June 1st?

  • I like the 3 divisions. Who knows that may become the norm.
