Lionel Messi has only played for FC Barcelona and now that it is official that he is leaving the club, people are wondering what is next for him. Here was the statement that was made from FC Barcelona earlier today involving Messi not returning to the club.
LATEST NEWS | Leo #Messi will not continue with FC Barcelona

The statement said even though both sides came to terms for a deal, it can’t be completed due to Spanish La Liga regulations on player registration. So what that means is that Messi was ready to sign a new deal that would see his weekly wage get reduced by 50%. Unfortunately, the club’s financial situation made it impossible for them to register him for the new season without drastically reducing their wage bill. Not only are Barcelona having this issue with Messi, but they are having this issue with other players as well. This smells like big trouble for Barcelona and the future of their club. Now what is next for one of the best players of this generation?
Where Does Messi Go?
Now that we have gone into a big part of why Messi is leaving, what is next for the Argentinian forward? Well there seems to be two teams that are heavily involved in the potential acquisition of Messi and both are already big time players in their respective leagues. Those two teams are Manchester City and PSG. Now both of these teams were rumored during the time when Messi was no longer under contract with Barcelona to be landing spots, but I am looking at what both teams have done in the transfer window and ask myself how would it be possible?
PSG:
PSG has been on a tear this summer with all of the signings that they have made. Here are the names that Paris Saint-Germain has signed so far this summer. Gianluigi Donarumma (Euro 2020 player of the tournament), Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Danilo Pereira. Those are four big name signings so far this summer, and Pereira is a solid defensive midfielder addition for them as well. The potential trio up front of Mbappe, Messi, and Neymar is an absolute scary sight to think of.
This team would look absolutely insane with the three of them starting up front for them. PSG is already a big favorite to win the Champions League, and adding Lionel Messi in my opinion would make them the favorite to win the Champions League this year. They are already reportedly in contact with Messi as well.

I think PSG is the favorite to land Messi, and boy what a acquisition that would be for Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester City
Now I think out of these two options this will be the more unlikely one out of the two, but we still have to talk about them. Messi and Pep Guardiola have a fantastic relationship with one another and this would be a big reason why Messi would go to City if he goes there. Unfortunately, they did just sign Jack Grealish and spent a bunch of money on him. I don’t think Lionel Messi is apart of the plans for Manchester City, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Look for their names to be thrown around, but I do doubt that Manchester City can afford Messi at this point and time.
Dark Horse Teams?
I have two potential teams that would be considered dark horses to have an outside shot at Messi. Those two teams are Chelsea and Juventus.
Juventus
For Juventus just the chance at potentially having both Messi and Ronaldo on the same team would be interesting to entertain. Trust me Juventus is a fantasy type of situation. It is 2021 however and we have seen crazy things that have happened. How crazy is it to think that we could see Ronaldo and Messi dominate the Serie A together? Pretty crazy in my opinion, but it is a dream scenario that would be crazy to think about in the future.
Chelsea
Chelsea on the otherhand could be more realistic out of the two. If anybody is crazy enough to make a move like this it is Roman Abramovich. He would easily spend any amount of money to draw fans in with the name Messi on the team. I look at how good Chelsea already is, and we could see that be a factor for Messi as well. Having his talent with the likes of Werner, Pulisic, and others would be must watch tv. Both of these scenarios are probably unlikely to happen. It is fun to think about though.
