Let’s Relax About Mookie Betts
I’ll start off by saying that Mookie Betts is definitely the best player on the Red Sox and at this moment deserves to have the Brinks truck backed up to his doorstep. Let’s just relax a little bit about Mookie though. He’s not better than Trout, I’m sorry, he just isn’t!
Not taking anything away from Betts but Trout is going to go down as a top 10 player of all-time. If Trout was in a marketable place like New York or Boston we’d realize just how special he truly is.
I am a huge Trout fan just for what he brings to the table and how he conducts himself. He’s a true professional. I’m also going to go on record saying that Trout will be a bargain by the time his contract is over. Ok, maybe not in the 10-12 years but up till then, yes absolutely he’ll be worth it.
Trout sneakily batted .312 with 39 home runs and 24 stolen bases. He’s just on a terrible team. That’s really the only negative thing I would say about his contract. Trout is going to have very limited playoff experience, if any. Baseball fans need Trout in the playoffs!
Now back to Mookie. Trout set the market at $430 million. Mookie shouldn’t get more than $400 million, and even that’s extremely high I think. Prior to last season Mookie only batted about .300 one other time and that was in 2016. Mookie is 100% a top player in the game and is definitely the best Right Fielder in baseball. The Red Sox should give him the money he deserves at the end of the day, but now might not be the time.
I don’t think it’s such a bad idea to let Mookie play out the next couple years of his current contract. *knock on wood* What if he’s terrible this year or gets hurt? Suddenly, his value goes way down. Now that could also backfire on the Sox and Mookie could continue to rake and be a top 2 player in the game and if that’s the case, even more reason to pay him.
I know it’s still spring training and there isn’t much Red Sox news to talk about, but let’s just ease up a bit of Mookie not wanting to be here. Let’s just let things play themselves out and I think Sox Nation will be happy with the end result. I believe Mookie will be here for a long time.
