Kenny Golladay and New York Giants Agree to Deal

Kenny Golladay and the New York Giants reached an agreement on a 4-year $72 million contract this afternoon. This news does not come as a surprise after Golladay had spent multiple days visiting the Giants. The Giants had some concerns about the way Golladay’s time in Detroit ended. He had a rocky relationship with former coach, Matt Patricia. Golladay is also coming off hip surgery that sidelined him for the final 9 games of 2020. Those concerns were cleared up by the time his meetings with the Giants ended.

What does Golladay bring?

Kenny Golladay and the New York Giants agreed to a contract.

The Giants have been looking for a number one receiver ever since they traded Odell Beckham away. Golladay has been the Lions top option the past three seasons and was a pro bowler in 2019. Golladay slides in immediately as Daniel Jones’s top target. He can work at all levels of the field and provides a big target for Daniel Jones. Golladay also opens the field for other playmakers like Evan Engram, Sterling Shepard, and Saquon Barkley. Theoretically, the Giants should have a high powered offense. They certainly have the playmakers to put up a lot of numbers. However, the success of the offense will be tied directly to the success of the offensive line.

Where do the Giants go now in the draft?

Wide receiver was one of the Giants top needs. They now have that under control with the Golladay signing. They were linked to top receivers Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle in the upcoming NFL draft. Where do they go from here now that WR is no longer a need? There are still plenty of holes the Giants need to fill and the draft is a perfect spot to fill them. They need to find a partner to play opposite of James Bradberry. They need to improve on the offensive line. And perhaps greatest of all, they need to acquire and edge pass rusher. I have lost count of how many times I have mentioned Gregory Rousseau on this blog, but he would be a nice addition. If Micah Parsons falls out of the top 10, it would be hard to imagine why the Giants would pass on him. He would be the perfect fit on the Giants defense.

I truly believe the Giants need to focus on defense in the first round of this draft. They have not drafted a linebacker in the first round since Carl Banks in 1984. Parsons would be the perfect guy to break that streak.

Final Thoughts

The Giants have been having a decent offseason so far. They have re-signed Leonard Williams and signed Kyle Rudolph in addition to the big splash in Golladay. Their offseason is really now beginning with draft prep. In addition, this could be the start of the end of Daniel Jones in New York. If he cannot lead the Giants this season and put up big numbers, it will be time to look for a new starting quarterback. Furthermore, he has all of the weapons he needs to succeed. He has a new number one target, Barkley will be coming back, and Evan Engram will be playing for a new contract. Jones needs to step up this season or there will be a new signal caller in New York.
