Jarren Duran Being Left Off Team USA’s Roster is a Win for the Red Sox

The Red Sox top outfield prospect Jarren Duran played for Team USA in the Olympic qualifying tournament back in late May and June. However, Team USA announced their final roster for the Olympics in Toyko and Duran is not on the roster.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the decision to leave Duran off Team USA had nothing to do with the Red Sox. The decision was made by the United States Olympic Committee due to potential logistical challenges if the Red Sox were to call up Duran.

The tournament will begin play on July 30 and it will run through August 7.

“Per a major league source, the decision not to include Duran on US Olympic Team was from the USOC,” Speier reported. “Red Sox would have been OK with him going – with the proviso that if they wanted to call him up, they could. With visa requirements and logistical challenges of replacing a player, Olympic team elected not to include him on the roster – for the same reason that the team doesn’t feature members of 40-man rosters. Duran is de facto big league depth at this point, very likely to reach the big leagues at some point this year.”

Will Duran be Promoted to the Major League Club Soon?

The 24-year-old Duran is having a great year with Triple-A Worcester hitting .278 with 15 homers, 31 RBIs in 39 games. Fans and media have been speculating for months on when Duran would get promoted to the major-league roster.

Duran being left off the Team USA roster doesn’t exactly mean he will be called up right away. The move could signal that the Red Sox are closer to adding Duran. The Red Sox have a need for a lead-off hitter at the top of their lineup.

Over the course of the last few weeks the club has used experimented with Kiké Hernandez, Marwin Gonzalez and Danny Santana from the lead-off spot. All three have been a disappointment from the no. 1 spot in the order.

Duran crushed two home runs for the Woo Sox on Tuesday and continues to make progress in Triple-A. “We are very pleased with his progress and the way he’s been playing,” Cora told reporters back on June 22. “I know people get excited.”

Cora would also point out that Duran needs to “fine tune” some things prior to his promotion to the big leagues.

“There’s more than just hitting home runs,” he explained. “If it’s tomorrow, or in a month, or whatever, I know we know he can help us. But there’s a few things still – he needs to keep working on it.”

Duran will eventually get called up to the big league roster and it could be as soon as this season. The fact he was left off Team USA’s roster indicates that he is closer to that becoming a reality.

Furthermore, with the trade deadline looming on the horizon, the Red Sox will be adding pieces to the roster. Duran could be called up prior to or even right after the deadline. The Red Sox need a lead-off hitter and Duran could check that box off for Chaim Bloom and Cora.

It’s unfortunate Red Sox fans will not see Duran suit up for Team USA. However, I think most Red Sox fans are ready for him to have the word Boston across his chest.
