Jaguars Fire Urban Meyer

After what has been a tumultuous season to say the least, the Jacksonville Jaguars fire Urban Meyer.

The news broke out earlier this morning as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter via Twitter. The move by the Jaguars to relieve Urban Meyer from his duties with the organization comes at the heel of yet another accusation. Needless to say, Urban’s time as NFL coach is one that many fans will be looking to move on from.

Urban’s Time as NFL Coach

Hiring Chris Doyle – First of Many Mistakes

Before the season even started, one of Urban Meyer’s first move felt like he was already on borrowed time.

Urban after getting the head coach role in Jacksonville, immediately went onto hiring former Iowa Hawkeyes strength coach, Chris Doyle. The hiring was questionable right off the get-go.

Doyle’s legacy has been one that was widely known as that of prejudice and unfair. Weeks after hiring Chris Doyle, Urban and the Jaguars fired Doyle.

The Tebow Experiment

Another one gone absolutely wrong! Urban Meyer grants Tim Tebow (33 years old) on April 29th an opportunity to try out with the team. Two weeks after, Urban goes ahead with giving Tebow a one-year deal to compete for a roster spot. It would be just few months later though, where while acknowledging that it would be an uphill battle for the 33 year old, that Urban Meyer would cut him off the roster as one of the first moves before the start of the NFL season.

COVID-19 Vaccination Snafu

In August, when Jacksonville was preparing their final roster and making cuts, Urban went out to say that vaccination status’ were certainly a part of the decision making. Prompting an immediate investigation by the NFL as players aren’t required by the league to be vaccinated.

Days after the investigation, the organization put out a statement denying the coaches claim.

Meyer’s Dirty Dancing

Back in October, following a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals after blowing a 14-0 lead, Meyer traveled from Cincinnati to Columbus, OH on his own, leaving the team to return on their own to Jacksonville.

While in his stay in Ohio, a raunchy video went viral of the head coach dancing with a younger woman at an Ohio bar. Days after, Urban would issue yet another apology.

The Final Push Leading To His Last Day!

Losing the locker room.

In weeks prior, Urban’s decision making was questioned after benching RB James Robinson and reducing his usage. Later on Trevor Lawrence would ask the coach to have Robinson involved especially after missing back-to-back games following fumbles.

Days later following this situation, an altercation would be reported that in a locker room speech, Meyer “delivered a biting message that he’s a winner and his assistant coaches are losers”. While many around the NFL thought for sure this would be the end there for Urban in Jacksonville, Shad Khan mentioned that the Jaguars would remain the course with him despite a dysfunctional atmosphere in the locker room.

Lastly, yesterday’s scandalous report drew the final straw. Allowing many to believe that this would be the final push leading to his termination. Former kicker for the Jaguars, Josh Lambo went public by reporting a story to the Tampa Bay Times regarding a situation with Urban Meyer.

According to Lambo, when confronting the coach for kicking him, Meyer said back to him “I’m the head ball coach, I’ll kick you whenever the f*** I want”

In Conclusion…

At first, it seemed like allowing Urban Meyer an opportunity in the NFL would open a new era for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, it is needless to say that after such a tumultuous season, this termination should’ve been made a long time ago. The bright side of things is that the next two games for the Jaguars are against the Jets and Houston Texans. With Darrell Bevell serving as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, my hope is that Jacksonville ends their season in a positive note and wins these games.

One major concern though has got to be the moral of the players in the locker room. As for Urban, well buddy! You clearly forgot that you weren’t in Columbus anymore but a friendly reminder that you’re not in the NFL any longer either.

Will certainly be interesting to see who takes over now that Jaguars fire Urban Meyer.
