J.T. Realmuto Isn’t “Stupid Money” But John Middleton Is Stupid If He Doesn’t Resign Him
Ever since last offseason when Phillies owner John Middleton said the the team might be “a little bit stupid” with their money when signing big free agents, the words have echoed in all of our minds. Sure signing Bryce Harper to a 13 year $330 million contract created a huge buzz in Philly but when you start throwing the words stupid money around it is pretty underwhelming. I mean I would die for Bryce Harper and his beautiful hair, hell I think Middleton should give his son a contract right now just to get a good price on him, but signing one big player will not put us back on Broad Street anytime soon.
That brings us to J.T. Realmuto’s arbitration hearing. The Phillies had the balls to go into a courtroom and argue with the absolute best catcher in baseball over $2.4 million? What exactly are we doing here? What happened to stupid money? Realmuto said that this doesn’t change things for him. We all know that is a lie. Now, they have jeopardized resigning one of their key pieces to a long term contract. Not to mention it helps solidifying an important part of their core group over the amount of money they pay Bryce Harper to take a round of BP. The whole thing is bananas to me.
Even Bryce Harper knows the Phillies need to do whatever they have to do in order to bring him back.
A year ago at this time, Bryce Harper was sitting home in Las Vegas still unemployed. Today, he is ecstatic with his decision to join the #Phillies, embraces the fanbase, and hopes JT Realmuto sticks around with him. https://t.co/ilMGKH4E59

I remember the pain of having bad catchers. Remember Chris Coste, Andrew Knapp, and Carlos Ruiz when he wasn’t on adderall? I’m here to tell you I don’t want to go back. The dude won a Silver Slugger, a Gold Glove, was an All Star, an All MLB Team recipient. Not to mention, he led the league in caught stealing percentage and number of runners caught stealing. This was all in his first year with the Phillies too. The man deserves all the money in the world for having to catch Vince Velazquez, Zach Eflin, and Nick Pivetta. Not to mention, Jake Arrieta throwing every pitch 10 feet off the plate or directly into the ground. Do the right thing John, we are all counting on you.
