It Wouldn’t Be Training Camp Season Without Player Holdouts

In a remarkable turn of events, several NFL players are threatening holdouts and are not reporting to training camp over contract negotiations! Who woulda thought this would ever happen. One of the most inevitable things in the NFL is players wanting more money than they’re making, and teams not wanting to give it to them. This year is proving to be no different.

Trouble in the Big Easy

Saints All-Pro receiver Michael Thomas is currently not at training camp as the two sides continue to negotiate a new deal. Thomas, who has come on as a dominant weapon, wants to be the first $20 million/year receiver in the league. Is he that good? Well, it may not matter. He is one of the best weapons Drew Brees has had in his tenure so the potential of him not playing must be scary for NOLA.

Front-7 holdouts

In Jacksonville, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue held out for a second day Thursday as the young, key defensive piece seeks a pay bump. While the Jags have a tight cap situation, head coach Doug Marrone is confident a deal will get done soon.

One of the best linebackers in the league is watching training camp from the sidelines. Bobby Wagner “will likely sit out til he gets a new deal” per Je Fann of NBC Sports Northwest. After watching teammate Russell Wilson make a few bucks in the offseason, the Seahawks linebacker wants the Brinks trucks backed up to his house.

…..And obviously running backs

Melvin Gordon didn’t report to Chargers camp on Wednesday as he fights the hard fight of NFL running backs trying to get paid. Obviously, teams are skeptical of giving backs big money as they tend to have a shorter tenure in the league, but Todd Gurley’s contract last year complicated things. This one may go a while because Gordon has had a history of injuries in the league, but when he’s on the field, he’s a force.

As of right now it’s not being called a holdout, but Zeke Elliot did not travel with the team to training camp. Coincidentally(probably not) he also wants a big extension for his talent. This is one to keep an eye on.
