Is Baker Mayfield Really The Franchise Quarterback For The Browns?

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, there has been a lot of debate around Baker Mayfield and if he really is the franchise QB the Cleveland Browns need.

The Cleveland Browns have struggled in getting a franchise QB since Otto Graham retired.  A player that took the team to championships every year he played. After Graham retired they really struggled to find a QB like him. Milt Pulm managed to carry the load for a few years, followed by Frank Ryan who helped them win their last championship in 1964.

Since the Browns re birthed in 1999 they have gone back and forth with quarterbacks trying to find the franchise QB they so desperately needed.

Then in 2018 it was time for the draft and the Cleveland Browns had the first pick, was this their time to get the Quarterback of the future?

Baker Mayfield’s Younger Career.

During his junior year in high school he went from a starter to a state champion, he managed to rank up for 247 of 378 passing (65.3 percent) for 3,788 yards, 45 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He was a player who was turning  a lot of people’s head and people started to ask who is Baker Mayfield?

During his second season at Lake Travis he nearly managed to take a double championship but fell short and was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs but this isn’t to knock Baker’s skills at all, during that season he managed to complete 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,467 yards, 22 TDs and three interceptions.

Baker decided to commit to Texas Tech and he became the starting quarterback, in his first start he passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns.

After this season Baker decided to transfer to Oklahoma due to a miscommunication with the coaching staff at Texas Tech. Baker did have to sit out until 201 due to transfer issues.

Mayfield finished his first season at Oklahoma with 3,700 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Throughout his whole college career he finished with 14,607 yards, 131 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. This was a player who was worth taking a bet on in the draft and this is exactly what the Browns did.

Is Baker The Future For The Browns?

When the Cleveland Browns picked Baker Mayfield in the 2018 with the number one pick overall. They were ready to finally say they have a franchise QB after struggling for so many years. There is so much pressure that comes with being the first overall pick.

Baker has a record of 29-27 but you also have to sit and think that this man has four different coaches in four years, it hasn’t been an easy ride for him, having to learn a new playbook every year get to know another coach it can’t be easy and must take it’s toll.

During his rookie season he produced 27 touchdowns and people started to think this is the QB we need but a year later he threw 21 interceptions, expectations can be to high sometimes and there is people who will be waiting to watch Baker fail.

Ask any Browns fan including myself 2020 was the best year. Baker finished with 3,563 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions through 16 games and even took the Browns to their first playoffs since 2002. If you can honestly sit there and say Baker isn’t the guy I don’t know what to say.

The 2021 season hasn’t been the easiest ride, I guess there is a high hope for this team after they made the playoffs last year to do it again and again but not every season is the same and sometimes it doesn’t go the right way. Baker has been riddled with injuries and so has the rest of the team not including covid still being around.

From 0-16 to 17-11 that is progress. For me I’m sticking with Baker Mayfield plan B doesn’t make sense at this point.
