How My Fantasy Hockey Season is Going

When COVID hit last March, I was 4th out of 12 in my fantasy hockey league. That’s a vast improvement from my 5th out of 8 previous best. I was on my way to winning another week and was confident that I’d finish in the top 3 at the end of the season.

Obviously, that never happened. So here I am, 2 months into the next season of fantasy sitting in a 4-way tie for 5th out of 12. I’m not nearly as optimistic as I was a year ago. But, here I am, and here’s how my team is looking.

Who’s Hot

Dvorak

He’s the most productive man on my team right now. Impressive, considering the club he plays for. He has 9 goals and 7 assists in 20 games played. Our league gets +.5 for every PIM, +.2 for SOG, and +1 for PPP. Dvorak has 8 PIMs, 39 SOG, and 7 PPP. What’s really set him apart is his 189 FOW, which earns him +.2 per win. He’s racked up 132.5 points for me so far and it’s only halfway through the season.

Boeser

The Canucks haven’t had a great season. Thankfully for me, Boeser is still as good as he was in better seasons. He’s at 12 goals. 10 assists in 24 games, 60 SOG, 10 PIM, and 6 PPP. If he took more faceoffs, he’d be well past what he’s at now. He’s sitting at 120.8, 2nd on my roster.

Pettersson

Everyone says he’s underperformed this season. I don’t fully disagree, but I also think he’s doing very well, again considering the team he’s on. Pettersson has 8 goals and 10 assists in 24 games, 60 SOG, 5 PPP, 6 PIM, and 63 FOW. He’s 3rd on my roster but could be first if more of those SOG hit the back of the net. He’s a talented player who needs more puck luck.

Eichel

The 4th best on my roster is somehow also on one of the worst teams in the league. Eichel hasn’t had the season he’s hoped for, but he’s certainly not having a bad one. With COVID and a recurring injury, he’s only played 16 games. He has 2 goals, 12 assists, 4 PIM, 9 PPP, 50 SOG, and 158 FOW. He’s another player who needs more puck luck to score but also needs to be a little more selfish.

What’s Not Going Well

COVID

I’ve had 4 Avs players, 2 Sabres, 2 Coyotes, 2 Canes, and 1 of miscellaneous other teams who have been hit by COVID protocols this season at one point or another. At one time, we only had 2 IR slots, so I had to bench a lot of players when they were out, losing out on points I could have gotten with other players. Obviously, everyone else in the fantasy league was dealing with the same issue, but I didn’t take these outings into consideration when I drafted 4 Avs. We have 4 IR slots now and I’ve done a lot of roster-shuffling (now down to 3 Avs and 1 Yote now, thankyouverymuch), but I’m stuck with a 3-3 record tied for 5th.

Concussions

Another IR issue is the fact that I’ve had 3 different players, all on different teams, get concussions. I had to drop Teravainen thanks to his unclear return timeline and I’ve had to consider it for Dylan Strome as well. No one ever knows how long concussions will take to heal, so both players are technically DTD rather than IR or Out, meaning if I kept them both, I would be 2 rosters spots down for who knows how long.

Overall

I’d love to say it’s going well, but I’m falling behind this week. There are plenty of players on my roster doing well; what’s killing me are the players out every other game. Maybe it’s my strategy that isn’t working with these roster fluctuations. Or maybe I just suck at fantasy. Either way, please send thoughts and prayers for my team.
